Default best junk yard engine

I am wondering what would be the best engine to buy and what vehicle it comes out of. It's for a budget build big single turbo car? I'm thinking a 6 liter truck engine. Any insight would be helpful as well as what stock engine limitations are.

budget turbo build with junk yard engine sounds like a bad idea.

OK lets forget the budget angle (Nothing I build is ever cheap anyway). I have a car with no engine and want to progessively build it into a turbo engine. Where do I start?
What internals have to change and at what power level?

Stock block is reasonably good for 550-600rwhp if you have a reliable tune on it...Above that the rods start to go and you may as well just change the pistons...As far as rods goes Eagle and Compstar are the two best contendors...Pistons I would choose Diamond, Wiseco, or possibly Mahle... Keep the stock crank in there and just have it polished...They are good to well over 850rwhp...That's 1000fwhp...What are your goals?? Et's, power, price???

I will probably have to change cam, rods and pistons. 800+ hp is the goal. I want to build my ol lady a toy. (I wont let her drive mine.) Is the 6.0 truck engine a good place to start or should I try and find an LS2 or something else? How are the heads/ intake?

The 6.0 truck block is a perfect place to start....They are rigid and done right can handle twice as much hp you're looking to get... As for the heads you can definitely use some LQ9 heads and just get them worked over a bit...Definitely upgrade the valve springs... I would go with an LS6 intake...

+1 for the iron 6.0 liter truck block! Also I would say to go with a set of patriot stage 3 6.0 liter heads, toss in an ls6 or GT2-3 cam, and spend the rest of the money on some badass internals as you will need them with 800+ hp.

My build is in process. However I will be surprise if it does not make around 500RWHP with mostly stock parts.

My buddy owns a junk yard. He said to pick out what I want. So what years/models trucks should I be looking in for my 6.0L? Are all the 6 liter heads/ blocks the same? I would also like to use the stock exhaust manifolds reversed.

no!!! 99 6.0l blocks have iron heads... I would go with a '00 and up... Just make sure that you get everything checked out if and when you do build it...Take it to a reputable builder and get it magnafluxed and a hi-temp dipped to check for cracks and get it completely clean... Do spend money on getting all of the required machining... Whatever you do don't skimp on the critical stuff... Have fun!!!
