Default Which Headers/Y-pipe for STS?

I have an sts kit and I need to get some new headers because the coating is flaking off of mine and I know it won't last long. Here are my 2 choices:

Jet Hot Longtubes and Y-Pipe with Jet Hot 2000 Black coating

Stainless Longtubes wrapped with header wrap

I think I can get the first for about $900, and the second one will probably be $1100 and will require me wrapping the exhaust.

I am guessing that since I am using the 2000 degree coating that the mild steel will hold up.

And yes, I am set on longtubes. With my cam choice (227/227 .564/.564 114LSA) I need a freer flowing exhaust

I'm not looking at the normal jet hot coating, I am getting the 2000 degree one.

And the whole factory manifolds thing, here is my understanding. The only thing that the factory manifolds are better for is less surface area for heat dissipation. The coated/wrapped longtubes will not dissipate tons of heat like uncoated headers, and the extra flow gain is worth it. I am not worried about spool time, I have the gt67 with the .81 a/r compressor housing and it spools up right away.

I say jethot's with the silver coating. Out of 4 different cars with rearmounts and long tubes on the the car with the Jet Hots has run correctly and spools fast.

i got he headers swapped out for the manifolds today. and for those that say there is no difference , im here to tell you it made a world of difference on my car. the headers that came off were jet-hot header and y-pipe no cats. i had y-pipe to turbo wrapped. i installed stock manifolds with mofified cats, wrapped from manifold to turbo. it reaches full boost about 700 rpm sooner. from a 45 roll with brake boost i was breaking the tires loose. it was cold around 55 degrees but still car never did that before over all boost seems to just come in alot sooner and easier. ill take it to get dyno tuned next friday, its running to lean now about 13.3 afr on full boost of 6 psi ,, was running 11.8 this morning driving to shop for swap

I had Jet Hot Headers and Y with no cats and it spooled slow if you ask me. I also had 4.11s which could make loading the motor a bit harder to do off the line. It made great power though. I ran a 12.0 @120 with a 2.0 60ft @ 8psi. This was on a 3800lb car which was out of gear at the end (4.11s). I wrapped the Y too. I'm going back to stock manifolds with off road y wrapped to the back when I get the new motor together.

I would like to see some before/after dyno graphs for this. Post them up when you get them.

my dyno results are from a year ago and i have had a gear swap, FMIC and several other mods , what i can tell you though is the feel in the seat of my pants and what the boost guage reads at lower rpms. i sprayed each manifold with ceramic paint , about 3 coats, sprayed the y-pipe and cat pipes the same then wrapped y-pipe and cat pipe , silicone sprayed and then ceramic paint over that, smells like crap right now lol. should subside in a week.

i had this discusson over a year ago on a thread with Zombie, and Engineerjoe, and i didnt believe it, i loved my longtubes. it took a year of reading and seeing to get me to try the swap, im that i finally did it.

the other way i know it works better is at 6 psi i was tuned at 11.8 AFR i gave it one good run on my way to the shop saturday. after the exhange of parts, at 6 psi im now at 13.3 AFR -- way to lean -- getting more air somehow???

Is it better to paint/wrap or just coat? I heard that if theyre coated, itll melt due to heat, and especially if you tried wrapping the coating.

Smoke20 what kind of paint are you using? Autozone stuff?

it a ceramic based paint sold at Advance Auto -- for headers and exhaust pipe. the header wrap is also sold there from DEI , DEI also has the silicone spray to water proof the wrap after you wrap it.
the paint is suppose to be good to 1200 degrees.

So i guess autozone is the one stop shop for this stuff.
Still wondering about the coating issue. Is it dependant on the heat rating of the coating? Seems that if painting from a can with wrap works about as good, that money could be better spend on porting.

i did not have the manifolds coated with a coating i just painted it with a ceramic paint. a coating like jet-hot might even do better??? i dont know i just went with what i had and im happy with the results.
