Default Turbo Oiling

are all turbo's oil or water cooled?
-i want something that is self contained
-2nd. but would it be best to have an oil cooled turbo?

There is no such thing as self contained. ALL turbos have to have oil run to and from it for lubrication of the "bearing".

I don't know about "ALL" turbos. Mine is oil cooled and I believe most if not all are. Not sure if there is much more of an explanation to give you...

there was once a turbo that was self contained,
i believe it was called aerocharger, but i dont think they are made anymore.
they were also a VATN design

that guys is what i was looking for...figured it was a stupid question but i needed to know.

-2nd do you guys use an oil cooler?

probably a reason for that.. lol

Some have used an oil cooler, but you WILL have to use a scavange pump then unless you tap somewhere on the engine to run it. You could put on on the line going to the turbo, but that would be pointless.

Self contained meaning no engine oil? I used a gear pump, a small cooler with fan and thermostat, a small resovoir, and an eectronic box to control oil flow. All the pieces are in the back along with the turbo! System hold a bout a quart of oil. It was not a cheap set up a little over a grand for everything minus turbo

Well, the bearings are lubricated in oil, which also carries off heat. You could have a self-contained oil system, if you wish. But lubrication vs. cooling should be considered separate subjects.
