Default STS M6 Owners - What gear are you running?

For an auto, 3.42 is generally considered the best gear because the turbo likes a load.
I know someone who is building a forged 383 and will run an STS at 12 lbs. of boost. What gear should he run with his M6?
Thanks.

i think it would really depend on what kind of racing he's gonna do. i mainly do highway rolls, so im gonna be moving to 2.75's pretty soon. but for track, the 3.42's sound good for the auto. i like lower gears, like a 3.08 or the 3.23. but i've never owned an auto fbody...... so i dont know much about the Autos

I run a 3.42 in my M6. But, it's the only gear I've used, so I really don't have anything to compare it to.

He is considering a 4.11. For a N/A auto, 3.73s are recommended. But for a turbo, 3.42s are recommended because the turbo likes having a load. I was wondering if the same holds true for M6, do they run better with a higher gear? My guess is that 1/4 mile runs are in his future, since he was considering such a low gear.
Thanks.

I would recommend against the 4.11s. stick with 3.42 or go to a 2.73 as mentioned above. You will see noticeable lag with 4.11s.

I think this is about me.. Well i do plan on 1/4 mile times but only to say that i have a legit 10 sec. car.(10.99 or 10.01 i don't care) I'm also looking at the road course for a little fun but the car will be mainly for the street. Gotta smart A$$ neighbor who just got the new Cobra and appreciates my "extinct and antique camaro" so i'm gonna eat his lunch....I'm going with the D60 since the 9" won't work with my 3 channel abs...(safety first!) And i was thinking 4.11 would be an all around fun gear for everything since i have an M6. but i am open to suggestions. My wife's (ahem..) 2000 Ram air, the rear axles went out when i was at G11 and i had to go thru it there on the lot. At least i got the hard luck award....anyway i put 3.73's in and it was a noticeable difference. M6 also...I rode in my friends 97 Z28 with 4.11's and man what a difference. of course he broke it learning the lower you go the weaker the 10 bolt is..but he went with the D60 with 4.11 and hasn't looked back since. ut this is my first turbo and being especially estranged being an STS and i really didn't think having 4.11's with the M6 would really make a difference....

I say no to 4.11s from experience with the STS kit. I have full boost later than I should and run out of gear well before the traps. I'm going back to 3.42s if I stay M6 after the motor rebuild.

if you stay N/A then get those 4.11's, but with turbo, you want a lower gear to help the turbo spool. just my opinion from what i've read

Interesting...I have the GT67q turbo upgrade with the water meth and i'm running the precooler from TRTTurbo for added protection. So you're saying with the 4.11's the turbo will not spool enough? Or too soon? Glad i haven't put the rear on order yet... Right now the engine is a 383 with factory lt1 heads etc. But i'm putting together a forged 383 with AFR LT4 210 heads for some pep. I guess i should keep my head out of NA thinking and realise the turbo is a different animal. I read somewhere that the STS turbo can be setup to boost early rpm range or later rpm range. My thinking was getting the rpms up there for the boost and 4.11's would do that nicely or so i thought. I guess really sitting down and looking at it the 3.42's would make better sense. Why would you not stay M6? Are you breaking parts?

The problem with the 4.10's on a turbo car is the lack of load through 1st in particular. The car is going to rev through the rpm's quicker, and you'd be lucky to see any boost in 1st.

I'm thinking about going auto too. A nice auto, nice stall, equals crazy launches!!

Another first hand experience with 4.10's with an STS. I installed the gears before I decided to go turbo and I ended up putting the 3.42's back in. WIth the 4.10's I ran through the gears so quick I barely even came to full boost and when I did it was for a millisecond or so.

3.42's are your best choice with an STS kit for sure.

Since I do all my own wrenching I am going to do a 3.73 install just to feel out the differences between the 3.42 and 3.73 to see if I can squeeze a better time with a little more accel. on the gear end.

I had both 4.11s and 3.42s in my car when it was a 6speed running 14psi.The 4.11s were fun but my car was MUCH faster when I went back to the 3.42s

Well i guess it settles it. I'll order the 3.42 ratio when i order the D60. I appreciate all of your opinions. now i have another question to post about how low can i go with the suspension with the STS setup.....I'll start a new post ....

yea the 4.10's will kill your turbo spool, run a 3.23 or even a 3.08 or something like that.

I think the gear question was pretty well answered by all the other guys. The reason I might like to go auto is because I plan to get really nuts with the power eventually. High HP clutches and built t56s are really expensive and track performance can be inconsistent. I figure I would spend just about half on a good TH400 and have reliable consistent performance for whatever horsepower I can get out of this kit. As of right now, I'm just going to burn up the SPEC stg3 I already have with some 3.42s in the stock rear.
