Default Need help deciding what block to start with

My goals are to eventually reach around 700 whp. No i dont have the money to jump into a katech 427 or really big cubes but I guess my question is, Should i start with something other then a 346 that is maybe a little more money and would be a better route to take? I'm thinking of a nice single.

Honestly you can get there on a modest forged 346ci and a T76... Get some decent flowing heads and a good fuel system then you'll be ready to go..

damn these internals aren't cheap huh. I just did a search and I'm looking at around 3500-4k including labor just on the bottom end pswew. Not including the cost to prep the engine for the build. mann

To keep cost down I would also stay with the 346 if you have one to use, 700 rwhp is not going to stress it much at all with good rods and pistons. Bob

thanks, that's probably what I'm going to do. I'll look for a 346 short block, put in a whole new forged rotating assembly. Any of you guys have a suggestion on what bottom end to go with? I gotta head to a football game and dont have much time to search : ( I will later though.

I'd say your limiting factor is money.

Go with an iron block, 408 and you'll be good to go. There is not than much difference in cost between an 346 and 408 (if you are starting from scratch).

If you think that the internals are expensive, wait until you start putting together the top end.

Money, heart ache and more money.

Good luck on the build.

David

i personally prefer a larger bore specifically to be able to use the L92 head setup, although it has not been 100% proven with FI

I would go with the LS2 or LQ9 block. You would have more options down the road having a 4 inch bore.
