I think a few of you are missing some things on the cost of this guys trans setup. The converter he has is ~ 1800.00, A TH400 with all the billet upgrades, and the 2.10 5 pinion gear set etc.... has an easy 3500.00 in hard parts before the SFI bellhousing so this is an easy 6,000 in parts then someone has to build everything it is steep but possible if it truley has the best of everything.
A quick search turned up the following
TH400 with the following - modified high flow pump, forged steel gears and roller bearing, billet 7/8 input shaft, intermediate drum, hardened forward drum, choice of chromoly planetary gear ratio 2.10, 2.20 or 2.48, roller bearings throughout, high pressure pro-brake valve body, seven clutch forward and direct drum pack, 5 clutch intermediate pack, oversized intermediate sprag element and outer race, billet steel forward clutch hub and deep aluminum pan. - $3595.00 add a dedenbear case to that and you are sitting at $4544.00
Another turned up the following in regards to convertors - 10" MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE STEEL STATOR CONVERTER, BILLET ALUMINUM COVER, BOLT TOGETHER, BIG SHAFT - $2495.00
That alone brings his total to $7039.00 and who knows if he had something else done to the trans. My point is that those of you calling BS might want to cut him some slack. That stuff there is just off the shelf. When I was crewing for a buddy who was running in Easy Street back in the days of the NMCA I remember him having a little under $5-k in a glide and bolt together convertor and that was 10 years ago.
To answer your question it is really a toss up regarding the overdrive function. If you want it then the 80 is the way to go. If not ****** up a good used purpose built 400 as there are a good many out there to be had for a decent price.

Hey David,
What gears are you running? How much slip are you seeing at the top of 3rd? How much does the converter pull the motor down on shifts?
Big Geek,
I agree...He just made it sound like his buddy had $8,000 in the trans. Which is way high. But when you subtract out a $2,000 converter it makes a little more sense. I would say I have near that in mine but I basically have a Rossler TH210 with OD in a 4L80E case. I love my trans and Midwest converter.

i have 3.42 gear and the 315/35/17 is about 25 1/2" tall
the slip is very minimal, i wasnt pickign up mph from locking so i just stopped doing that to save the converter.
i am still about 750 or so rpm drop on the shifts, exept going into overdrive i think thats 500.
