Default Head Studs

When is it a good time to go with head studs apposed to regular head bolts? Same question with main studs. I'll be running a D1sc Procharger on a forged 346 and maybe a small shot of spray every now and again. I don't want to under build the motor but at the same time I'd hate to over spend since I'm not a huge budget build.

Do it now... you'll just end up upgrading later on. And they're only like $120 more than new ARP bolts...

I figured as much. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for how much horsepower standard bolts, arp bolts and studs will hold?

I'm around 700rwhp with ARP bolts... but I'm going to studs this season.

We always use head studs. I had a customer who was installing his own heads using head bolts, and he pulled threads out of the block. That won't happen with head studs. Bob

I don't want to hijack so just consider this as helping to add some info to the thread.

Any issue to changing bolts to studs one at a time on heads that are already bolted down so you could change anytime? (as long as you haven't already poped the HG)

I don't see a problem with doing that. If you're not running boost, I wouldn't swap the head bolts out to head studs just for the sake of having head studs. Since you are in the forced induction section, I'll assume the Vega is going the forced induction route. Bob

Yep I kinda changed to the FI route and the motor has not been ran yet so I was thinking of just changing them out one at a time before it starts.

Thx
