I believe straight Ethanol has an "octane" rating of aroud 114.
They mix E-85 with the lowest grade fuel possible.
So, quick and dirty math
Max Ethanol in E-85 is 82%
85 Octane to denature is 18%

I know this is not exact, so don't shoot me over it.
114*.82=93.48
85*.18=15.3
93.48+15.3=108.78
Again, I am sure there is a way more complicated and scientific way to get to it, but it is the morning and I have things to do.

E98 is 111 (with denaturant). E85 is 105 to 101 octane (when it's e70 winter blend) Keep your compression about 9:1 on a fuely motor as you don't get the cooler intake charge because of the fuel cooling the intake like a carbed set-up. More boost will net you more power than simply raising the compression. We've run 11:1+ on 10 psi, but it's diminishing returns because of the octane level. e85 is 85% in the summer, depending on where you live, who supplies the fuel, etc. Most of the time it's around 80%

From my E85 contact:

John,

As far as materials go we have found that billet aluminum is not a problem, most hard
alloys operate well with E85. The issue with aluminum is when it's soft aluminum. like
what's used in low quality die-casting. We also do not recommend the use of aluminum fuel
tanks for E85. Plastic tanks work much better, and prevent any galvanic issues from
occurring.

Rubber connectors are probably okay if they are not natural rubber but a composite. Viton
works extremely well as does neoprene, polyethylene and nitrile to name a few. Anything
that's Teflon coated or lined is excellent with high concentrations of ethanol, in fact
Teflon is probably the best material overall.

Braided stainless lines are fine, the important question is what are they lined with? If
it's any of the materials that I mentioned above it's good especially if it's Teflon.

Hope this info is helpful...

Mitch

What about the earlier stock steel tanks? Any adverse effects on those?

Default Summer = 105 / Winter = 100

Up in MI there are three versions of E85 based on ambient temps for starting issues associated with the E portion of E85.

In the summer it is a 'real' E85 at 105 octane. In the winter, with the additional gasoline, it's more like E75 vs. E85 with a value of 100. So, moving from winter to spring (and also from fall to winter), the mix is also changed to move from E85 to more like E80 (at 102).

So, Winter = 100 (E75) / Summer = 105 (E85) / Fall & Spring = 102 (E80)

If you want consistancy where three different blends of E85 are formulated, in the summer a 50 / 50 mix of E85 and 87 gas will result in 96 octane, while in the winter the same net 96 # can be achieved by mixing 'winter' E85 with 92 octane gasoline. In the fall and spring - just use mid-grade.

Simple!

from what i have read, there also was a thread here not to long ago talking about the affects of various compressions versus boost.
