Default question about charge air.............

How hot is the compressed air coming out of a turbo going into the intercooler?

I guess it depoends on the size turbo, but say a 408ci with an S91 for example.

Just curious how hot it gets.

if it is a rearmount then it could reach 50+ above ambient temp frontmount could reach alot more than that since the housng can get red hot the heat transfers to the compressor housing.

For a setup like that, a intercooler is a must. You may be able to get away with using a carb but your IAT's will suffer big time. Inlet air is a nice chunk of power as well.

Depending on boost level you may see 130-160 IAT's for a standard sized A2A.

thanks. has anyone ever tried using two intercoolers instead of one big one? I mean two thin front mounts, the same size, up front. Charge air goes into the front one then out and into the one right behind it, then to the intake. Like two pieces of bread with a tiny space between the two. Wouldn't that allow alot more surface area for cooling than one thick intercooler?

Just wondering. Not trying to reinvent the wheel but someone one day will make a better intercooler, you know!

Double the restriction thus offseting the efficiency more than you would with a larger, better single core I would think.

Most of the heat is introduced to the air when it is compressed not from heat transfer.

water to air if you want to run a smaller cooler but be ready for sticker shock!

some years ago, i did some testing with an old d1b procharger-at 18 lbs boost, i measured 330 deg air temp coming out of the blower-i was running an a/a intercooler, and the temp coming out of the i/c was down to 189 degs, after a 1/4 mile pass
i then made a pass with the i/c disc., wondering if it was causing some rest. and adding to the high heat-i terminated the run at 1/8, as the temps were up to 270, figured they would go to high, fry the motor-this was in an old gen 1 s/b 350, 9.5 comp-it wasnt a high dollar motor, but was the most bullit proof thing i ever had-it saw a lot of diff parts, never gave up, lol

quicksilverado is right. It depends on the boost level, compressor efficiency, and ambient temperature. Some examples assuming 100% efficient compression (impossible) and 80 deg ambient:

At 6 psi boost, T2 = 136 deg
At 12 psi boost, T2 = 181 deg
At 18 psi boost, T2 = 219 deg
At 24 psi boost, T2 = 252 deg

These are minimums because when you factor in ~70% efficient compressors, the temps will be much higher.
