Default Here is a new type of stock engine failure! 749whp and this!

Well seems that the limit on the stock ls-2 for Dave was the cam locating pin. It decided to fall out on a 5th gear highway pull, Thus causing bolts to sheer off and cause the cam to stop moving.

We pulled over and turned the engine over and it spun over super fast. Immediately we thought oh no there goes the timing chain. So we pulled the oil cap off to watch a rocker while turning over the eng. and confirmed what we thought. Well sorta.

Here is what we seen after pulling the timing cover. The pin was in perfect shape at the bottom of the oil pan too.

Seems to be so, the pin looked perfect sitting in the bottom of the pan.

About 8 valves and 5-6 pistons, it was late I don't remember exactly. One push rod was so bent it barely came out lol. We are putting in a used Lq9 Escalade motor, then we are going to push that one till failure. It has 93k on it, all we will do is put in dual springs, LS2 cam, and a timing set with a pin keeper mod lol.

Thats shitty, I remember reading your last post and you thought it was the chain and made me a nit worried about the LS2 chain. Can't believe it was that damn lil pin that popped that motor. That sucks man!

pin might have got caught in the chain and locked up the timing gear.... but looks to me like the bolts loosened up first and then sheared off.

Same here.

I'd be confident to run it with no pin, proper grade bolts torqued to the correct specs WILL hold.
Once the bolts come loose they bang around until they've had it and break.

+2, you got the cart before the horse. Pin is not a necessity. Wouldn't put one together without it but as mentioned properly torqued and loctited Grade 8 bolts would hold everything just fine

You may be missing the point as this engine was not pulled apart. GM assembled it, the point was to make silly power on a as stock as possible engine. We did not install the cam bolts lol. This was GM's fault I think it would have happened if the engine remained stock forever.
