Default crazy idea of mine for boost...

My friend and I were talking and we had this idea. What if instead of hooking up a supercharger or a turbo you somehow hook up a pressurized tank to the engine? It could be like a scuba tank or something and would allow for a wide range of psi. A computer could even be hooked up to adjust how much pressure is released into the engine with throttle position. Advantages to this system would be no need for your engine to drive it, and it would probably be a lot cheaper, just fill up the tank when you want to use it. It would have to be short term though, maybe just a 1/4 mile run or two.

Has anyone ever heard of this idea? I tried searching a few places but I couldn't find any info.

I doubt they would let you drive down the track with a very pressurized scuba tank =)

Why not? Many people go down the track w/ a pressurized tank its called nitrous or naws!

I'm not sure what happened to it but a few years ago a company called DEI (not junior) was in developement of a CO2 powered s/c instead of belt driven! It was meant to be a cheaper way of boosting the motor w/o any additional drag. The CO2 was sprayed into a sealed unit that would spin and compress the incoming air. I dont know what happened but the theory was sound IMO.

hmmm that makes more sense to have it drive a unit instead of shooting right into an engine lol thats the answer i was looking for thanks!

what about using a weed eater engine to power a s/c, that way you don't have any back pressure of a turbo or parasitic loss from a supercharger. Even better, use an electic motor to power it so you don't have to worry about it running out of gas!

In a word.. no. There's not enough volume of air. It would work... or should I say 'could' work for about 15 seconds. However, you wouldn't see much boost because you can't move that much volume of air.
Scuba tanks are pressurized to 3000 psi. There's only a couple cu ft of air though. A s/c or t/c flows that every couple seconds.
The reason N2o works is the '2" part. It's 2 nitrogen molecules.

stick with hot chick pics...

edited.. thanks. was typing too fast and not paying attention.

The reason that nitrous works is the N part. The nitrogen is used as a buffer because pure O2 is too volitile.
The co2 powered S/C seemed to be an all around good idea, Just dont know what happened to it. I cant seem to find any info on it.
