Default Going new direction...Boost

Well I built a forged H/C/N20 motor this last winter and it turned out to be a pretty big headache in the end. The machine shop that I had do all the work was absolutely terrible and essentially I am tearing the motor down yet again to fix their mistake... But this time, on the rebuild I am going to build it for what I originally wanted to build it for, a Procharger.

I am looking at going with the D1SC and am wanting to hit the 600-650rwph mark. That's about all I am looking for out of the car power wise. I want to keep it a street car and I think that anything above that would just be too much for the street and I really wouldn't be able to enjoy it. I would like to be able to get into the 10's as well. I don't know a lot about the boosted community and am trying to search and find out everything I need to know. I'm sure it will be a learning process just as my last build was and I look forward to that.

A first few questions though, I obviously cannot use my current H/C combo for boost so I will be selling my heads and cam. What are popular H/C combinations for boost? I am looking to stay around 10-12 on the boost so I will be upgrading to ARP heads studs and main studs as well. I currently have Cometic .040 head gaskets which I think are one use only so I will probably have to buy new head gaskets as well. What is recommended here?

If anyone has any more information to offer up I am all ears at this point. This will be a winter build into next spring so I have some time to plan this out.

Thanks in advance!

well if ur on a budget some 317's heads will work, gaskets id do MLS.

if budget isnt a problem then some AFR'S OR ETP'S

you will need more fuel so look into upgrading that also some 60's pound injectors will do the job, drivetrain will become an issue also so save up for that also.

Force induction gets pricey, also need gauges

check out exoticperformanceplus.com website look under project cars and customers cars.Proven procharger combinations in there , most of the cars in there also show how much they made on the dyno and what parts were used. Also they will easily be able to help u with the procharger as they have killer prices on prochargers.

Well I'm hoping that the trans should be fine for a while. It's a level 2 performabuilt with about 500 miles on it so it's pretty fresh and I'm only looking to push about 600 or so. New rear end I will definitely be needing. With boost is there really a worthwhile gain in going with a $2400 set of AFR's over the PRC LS6's? I mean I could understand N/A because airflow is very important but under boost conditions I wouldn't figure it'd be as critical or worth the $$. Also, would MLS gaskets be strong enough to hold up under about 12lbs of boost?

Gotcha. Thanks man. Would the AFR's be necessary with only 12 lbs of boost though? $$ I will be using ARP head studs and main studs.

I don't think they are absolutely necessary. Just nice to have if you can. I've seen people max out the D1SC with 241s and ls6s.

Cool, thanks for the help guys, I think I'd rather use the extra $1000 for a new rear end as trans2000am said. I'm also going to probably need to up my injectors from 42lbs to 60 and throw a new fuel pump in there as well.

i would do forged pistons at least, stockish 317 6.0 heads, stock LS6 cam and my turbo kit. You will hit 650rwhp easily at those boost levels! PM me if you want more info on it ~

317's have been taken to 800+rwhp. Its perfectly fine, they are good heads for what they are and for what they cost...Its like $250-$300 for a NICE set and like someone else mentioned you can spend the rest of the big money somewhere else where you're gonna really need it (like the fuel system, transmition, or rear-end if your rear is stock)
either way good luck !!!

I've got forged pistons and rods already. All I am needing to do is stud the bottom end and heads and swap out heads and cam. I was beginning to think about going with the blower cam grind that EPP offers and a set of Patriot Stage 2 6.0L heads, how much power difference would I be looking at under 12lbs of boost between that setup and say a stock set of 317's and a 02+ Z06 cam (LS6)?

I have EPP's blower cam and untouched 317 heads (just patriot dual springs)... i put down down just under 600HP on 8lbs thru a D1. I also have mine tuned VERY conservative, as i am still on the stock bottom end. Just to give you an idea of what could be expected.

I would imagine w/ worked 317's and another 4lbs of boost you will be at the high end of your expectations.

As stated fuel system is a must, I am having issues at the moment w/ my single racetronix pump, and am switching to a dual intank setup.

Good luck these car's are a blast with boost!!!
