Im going to borrow the coils off a friends car after work today. Im going to start with the coils since they take like 15mins to swap. Ill take it for a run with nothing else changed but coils and see where im at.

If there is no change ill pop the covers off check springs and plugs and wires.
With my luck its not the coils, that would be way to easy.

I was waiting for that. I know a lot of people with over 100k on stock coils. But you never know, even a brand new part can fail. For the 15mins it takes its worth a shot.

Look over the coil harness and make sure you don't have any obvious pinches or breaks in any of them.

It felt like an ignition miss. Pulled the plugs and one was way different color. Everything except the coils were new. Threw new coils on and fixed.

MSD coils are not a waste. They may not be the biggest bang for the buck, but they work great and look cool. If they are a waste, then why are they on Bob's car at Exotic? Me thinks he knows what he is doing....

They are a waste, and have had lots of failures.

I had a bad coil once, it would break up over 4000 rpm. I used the cylinder misfire data to find the suspected coil.

Okay i decided to pull the covers. I dont see anything really obviously broken as far as the springs. I got a pick in there and kinda compressed the inner springs and they all feel fine. I dont see any cracked or anything.

Would it be pretty obvious if some thing was broken?

I have some coils im going to throw on now.

The first part of your sentance is your opinion, and the second part is bad things you have read online from a few sources. Mine have been fine for over a year. I see them more and more on high end builders and cars, so I will stand by my statements.

Ok msds suck, msds rock. Whatever.

I just pulled all the plugs and they look perfect. They are all still at .30 gap,no oil, just a nice clean looking plug. I also performed a compression test and all cylinders were between 150psi-160psi. So i think thats good.

Im hoping these coils fix it.

Do you guys think i should close the gap on my tr7s to .25

They should not NEED to be that tight...but if you are having misfire problems it wont hurt anything to try them that tight.

Have to remember the coils on these fire a 1/8 as much as a regular distributor type ignition.

And yes they can be bad brand new, just not a very high failure rate. I have had more issues with the coil wiring being pinched/chaffed shorting on the valve covers, check them carefully if swapping the whole coil assembly fixes your problem.

My shop closes at 8 so i ran out of time to put the pass side valve cover back on. The gasket was stretched and i had to go out and buy a new one. So ill be up at 6am at the shop putting that back on and testing with the new coils.

I did find one put wire that read ofl on my multimeter. Every other one was fine. It wasnt burnt or anything. I hope thats all it was.

Is there anyway with hp tuners to test for misfires at idle? Or to narrow in on one cylinder that is missing. I just bought hp tuners but im still a newb at it.

Yes hptuners has a misfire PID, just click on all 8 of them and in most acses it will show a bad cylinder if it is just one.

From the main table display you right click and go to insert, then click on the engine diagnostics tab, then misfire, then each current cylinder.

Alex,

I gave you a misfire config when we tried it the other day. In the scanner, just go to open config, and it should be labeled "Misfire". I'd post a one of the data logs and the dyno sheet from the other day as well.

Well im going to throw yet another set of wires on this thing. Msd wires suck. You can only take them off a couple times before they become un reliable. I found one that was open and i just put it all back together and did not have much confidence in how tight the wires were on the plugs.

They seem to loose for my liking. I wish i could run factory wires but my turbo log requires me to run a plug that i can make a 90 bend on the plug boot. Msd is the only one i can find that does that.

Magnecor makes what you need...plus the red boots are rated 200F more than the gray MSD boots.

did you ever try closing the gap? i know you have a lot better ignition system than my ol lt1 but gapping mine down to 25 totally fixed my breakup over 4,000.

I lowered the gap to .27 but i havent gotten a chance to test it out due to the wires. I can already hear it missing just by removing the wires and reinstalling them.

This is the 3rd or 4th time they have been off and i think thats the max with the msds.
They get to loose after they have been on and off.

Ill check the magnacore ones out.

Thanks guys.
