Default Breaking up at 6k,do coils go bad???

Okay so im on the dyno yesterday tuning for the new converter that now is a 3 disc so we could lock it on the dyno.

Right at about 5700rpm it sounds like its breaking up alittle, kinda like a minor misfire. I lose about 100hp at the point and then at about 6100rpm it kinda starts coming back slightly.

When this happens, boost is constant at 15-15.5psi the entire time,no knock, timing is at 16 total, afr is constant in the 11-11.5afr range, fuel pressure is a steady 70psi and injectors are about 70%duty.

I have no clue what is going on here. The tires arnt spinning either, the trans and converter are brand new.

Im starting to think that this has been going on the entire time ive had the turbo kit on the car. It pulls like a bastard around town but when ive gone to the track with the smaller pte67 it ran a 10.8 @ only 122. I cant get a good mph,im thinking because im loosing 100hp up top.

Could i have a bad coil or 2.this is the only thing on the car that isnt brand new or hasnt been checked a million times. Is there a test i can do on the coils?

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to let everyone know all facts

Alex

It's missing?

You are running TR6's at what gap? How about gap 'em a little tighter and then increase the dwell time of the coils via HPT?

Not valve float?

This setup made 560whp at 5700rpm and was pulling really hard then its like someone pressed the "minus 100hp button" and it suddenly drops off about 100hp. It also made 630ftlbs by about 3200rpm. This is a running on a Mustang dyno with a locked 3600 verter throught a 9inch. I think it has 600-625whp in it all day if it could pull to 7k.

They are tr7s gapped at .30. I dont think its valve float because it does start coming back slightly after about 6100 rpms. I was think of closing them to about .025 but should i throw a better coil at the car while im there. Truck coils maybe??

John, I have hp tuners now but im a newb and have no clue how to increase the dwell time. If you could show me how to do that one day that would be great.

I can duplicate the mis on the highway everytime. 3rd gear right at 6k you can hear it. Its hard to feel that its loosing power on the highway though.

What fuel are you running, if you are trying to do this on pump I would be using 8's at .022 or so.

If running race fuel 6's at .035 will be ok if your dwell time is correct.

Bad coil

Good coil. No other changes at all.

I guess that is possible.I had the covers off 1k ago and everything was fine. What springs were you running? Is it the outer or inner spring that usually breaks?

Im going to take off the covers tomorrow and check out all the springs. If they are okay,im going to close the gap alittle on the plugs and run some truck coils.

MSD coils are a waste of money.

I run truck coils MSD truck wires, pulls to 7400 no problem.

My 2000 Z/28 with h/c/n20 pulled to 7100 no problem, 10.008@133 on a 150 shot. I ran TR8's gapped at .030.

Pull the plugs first. I wore out a set of plugs in like 500 miles, car was still running good but the gap went from .032 to .040. Hardly any passes on them either, I was told idling and low speed driving kills them.

We run TR-6 plugs gapped at .025 up to 850rwhp.Sounds like you have a coil problem.

I think we are having spark blow out. My set up is doing the exact same that when it hit's 15.5 #'s of boost.

I know that my springs are good, coils are good, & my plugs are brand new tr6's.

A couple of threads below one guy went to tr 7's gapped at .025 & the problem went away. I am going to try that.

Just borrow a known good set of stock coils, there should be no reason for you to need anything else. I would check the current plugs and let them tell you if they are the right range or not, but if you have good octane in the car I am sure you could use a "hotter" plug. Also pull the valvecovers and look for a broken spring. Eventhough the springs you have should be fine....you do have quite a bit of backpressure on them.

I would say the best spring is the patriot extreme which would be the best for the money.
