Default trap door for access hole

Does anyone have or know where I can get somekind of sheetmetal trap door to go over the hole you cut for access to the fuel pump. I have always just screwed down a piece of sheetmetal but I would like to replace it with somekind of door. Also working on another priject which could use the same thing.

So post up if you know of anyplace that sells something like this.

I would just put a hinge on the piece you cut out and put a tab and some king of lock to keep it locked down!!

That would actually be a good idea, keep it taped up and sealed. Pics if you do it

You would want to get some foam so that it seals and a flush mount locking tab

I'm sorry, but is it that hard to take the tank out and put a fuel pump in the wright way? It just seem lazy to cut a hole in the car to change the pump..IMO

some people with welded exhaust wouldnt wanna cut up their exhaust to drop the tank

thinking of running velcro on my access panel. right now, just the stock sheet metal has been cut on 3 sides and flipped up

ive seen alot of people using those fuse box covers like you would put on the wall of your house, i guess lowes would have them

they did however put foam between the door and the car, to keep the rattling down, but it was a perfect fit and made it really easy to access it

and remember, always cut the hole about twice as big as you think you're gonna need it.

I did put a piece of flat aluminum plate with a foam seal around the access hole. For those of you that do not know it takes about 30 minutes to change a pump this way instead of pulling the rear out or alteast halfway out and then wrestling the tank out. Which is a pain if it is full when the pump goes out!

this questiopn was more for the other project I'm working on. Where I cut out the t-top bucket and mounted a 10 gallon cell. I made a frame around the top and want to sheet metal across it to seal the fuel cell away from the drivers comaprtment. but I want to put a trap door in. it is not feasable to screw down the complete piece across it and I do not want to hinge that big of piece either.

silicon may work better for that. I used 4 sheetmetal screws in the corners. just make sure they are kinda short. too long and you will go into the tank!

Have you dropped your tank before?? I just did mine the old fashion way yesterday... I was like oh this isn't going to be that bad... After removing the exhaust, pan hard bar, shocks, springs, sway bar links and dropping the rear end completly out of the way I was finally to the tank... Believe me a huge pain in the ***!! I will def cut a hole for the next time I have to do it!! 1.5 hour job or 10 min?? I think i will go with 10 mins!!!

This is what I was looking for. Got a tip from a friend that jegs had them and after alot of searching on the site I found it. Not sure if it will be big enough to cover the hole or not. but it will definately work for my other project.

I went to the hardware store and bought some small brass hinges that were very flat. Their original purpose was for something like a jewerly box or something (it has been a while).
I used the orginal piece of sheet metal, screwed the hinges into the metal, fashioned a clasp on the other side, and then siliconed all around.
Next time I have to go in, all I have to do is remove the silicone, open the door, and I'm in. Total cost was somewhere arount $3-$4.

ok i use to do tons of these on thirdgen cars

i used a piano henge
and 3m molding
put the molding on all 3 sides ( one side will have the henge )
once you put the heavy *** carpet back over it it keeps it down well
it wont rattle either
and if ya ever have a fuel pump go down or you can change pumps on the side of the road ( been there done that! )

That is not big enough. They have the metal lines that come off of the top also that have to be accounted for.

Yeah I really didn't think it is big enough.

But I really posted this thread for the other project I mentioned more than anything. this will work for that. Just hoping to kill 2 birds with one stone. But this piece is atill along the lines of what I'm looking for just bigger.
