Default Fuel Gauge Mis-reading??

Hey all.
This just started happening. I noticed ever since I filled up one day, been about 3 days now.. that my fuel gauge is still reading full. Thats just about impossible, haha. I dont think its the gauge itself on the console because it stills moves back and forth, but it always goes back to Full after a few minutes of driving. Perhaps a common electrical short of some type? Wanted to know if someone knew what this is right away or if any of you have had this problem before and what the fix/solution is. Thanks for your time.

Marc

Tampa area Shell refinery put out some bad
sulfur level gasolines around Memorial Day, it
was in all the media about how it would hose
up fuel senders. Maybe this is your deal.

As to the solution, I dunno.

So it's safe to assume it's the sending unit? How much would that set me back, im afraid to ask.

sending unit is around $90 from the dealer... however the dealers i have talked to about having the repair done, replace it the whole pump assembly as a unit on the 1998 cars.... $596 part

My total quote, that i sent to shell is for $1049 for the repair. after 6 hours labor, and tax.

Im debating what to do, i really don't trust the dealers to do this correctly, and i am putting in a ractronix fuel pump, that i don't think they will do for me.

Hmm, mine wasn't caused by Shell, it just started doing it on it's own. Only thing I can think of is the couple times I had to run unleaded and not premium in it, but I can't belive that would have hosed it. How hard could it be to replace, 12-pack and a Saturday perhaps...

Mine JUST started doing this...seems like it stays on full forever, but when it starts moving down, it goes down in a hurry (like over the span of 30 miles or so). I really don't want to replace the sending unit...

It wasn't just the Shell stations that were affected by this btw. But like said, it was around Memorial day.
