Default Gas Tank Removal HELP

Ok, I ended up cutting the exhaust pipe to get that out of the way instead of dropping the rear end to remove it on my friends 1998 Trans Am. I got the gas tank loose and even jacked up the passenger side shock as far as possible. I disconnected all the lines but the damn tank just won't come out. The gas cap portion of the tank or the arm part won't come all the way out. We can almost turn the tank upside down with it loose but it just won't slide all the way out. What is the best way about removing the gas tank? We are totally stumped and don't want to damage anything.

Thanks!

Are you sure you have enough room? If so then play with the filler neck some more. It took my friend and me probably an hour to wrestle the damned thing out before the tank was completely free. I think there was a bolt somewhere in there that had to be removed from within the wheel well or by reaching into the gas cap area.

Drop the passenger's side first then slide it out away from the filler neck. BTW the filler neck likes to hang up on everything...make sure you remove the plastic cup inside the fuel door and the 10mm bolt holding the neck itself.

The tank is hanging completely free on the filler neck holding only holding it up. The filler neck won't come off the tank which would be awesome if it did. There just isn't enough room to wiggle the tank around above the pumpkin and have it drop free. We tried to drop the passenger side first and sliding it over as far as it will go but it hangs up on the frame of the car even after turning the tank around on itself and having 3 people work on it we can't get it to drop out. So we've come to the unanimous conclusion to just drop the rear end entirely. Thank so much Pontiac for making such a great design

We dropped the rear end and the entire thing came out real easy and went back up with minor complication. However now the car with cut exhaust is idling really fast and will actually accelerate on it's own up to about 45 mph. I'm not sure if it's just because I cut the exhaust or what the deal is but it's quite frightening and loud.

98's have a steel filler neck & require more work to remove. On my 01 I can drop the tank in minutes without lowering the rear. My 98 requires that I drop the rear a lot.

dude. i didn't remove the exhaust on my car (Stock pipe where its at over axle in way of gas tank) and i got mine out. it just takes some manuevring and a friend moving up on the exhaust pipe back and forth. mine slid right out.

i must say though you do have to bend the hell outa the filler neck and such... but everything is fine.

did you unbolt the filler neck? pull the plastic inside the gas door and just inside (if you pull the wheel well plastic) you can see there is a bolt holding the filler neck.

I am about to replace the fp in my SS, does it require the rear to be dropped or will it come out without? Just curious since things change from year to year.

You should be fine. I just did mine this past weekend. Raised the chasis and let the rear drop as low as possible. Removed the exhaust, the panhard support bar (not the panhard bar), and the 2 heat shields. After that, it came right out, with a little effort (FYI - drop the passanger side down first). And thats with a larger 12 bolt rear.

If you plan on getting rid of the tank just cut it into pieces with a sawzaw or the ever popular dremel, lol. But good luck it should just pop out, with a little wrestling around, and somebody to help.

Well I did the cutout instead. I have some pics I should put up so others can see it. Trying to follow links from other sites is a pain in the ***.

Default Fuel tank removal

Me and a buddy did mine 2 weeks ago on my 99 Z28 ( I now have to help him do his fuel pump on his 99 Vette) I just jacked up the back of the car real high, unbolted the rearmost exhaust hangers rather than cut my exhaust , removed my panhard bar and used the weight of 1/2 tank of gas left when my fuel pump died to push the muffler down far enough to remove the tank be sure to remove/disconnect the filler neck before restling the tank out. Empty the gas (It will never go back in anyway with gas in it) out and clean the tank before putting th new pump in DO NOT RUN THE PUMP DRY ! I dunked mine in a bucket of gas before putting it in the tank and then put 8 gallons of gas in the tank and ignition cycled the pump off and on 5 times before starting the car.I used a Racetronix from Thunder racing with the HD wire harness a real easy to install and works great.

You will need
Fuel line dissconnectors
Wire ties If you get the HD wire harness
a new fuel filter-cheap insurance
lots of rags
A good buddy ?
about 4 hours
an impact-electric/pneumatic is helpful
and a few other common tools
