Default Carbon build up on exhaust tips.

I have a large amount of carbon build up on my tips, and on my qtec cut out. Am I running rich?...My gas milage sucks too (17mpg on the highway). Current mods: MTI lid, K&N filter, descreened maf, and Qtec. Car is a 2001 WS6 A4. If I am running rich, will something like the MAFT fix my problem? Who sells it (MTI?), and where can I find out more info on it?

Carbon on my tips from day 1, stock. Don't hurt
nothin' beside appearance. 17 highway MPG is low
(I get right at 20 with Predator tune but got a
MPG or two more, with stock tune). On the hwy
you should be closed loop and the MAFT or any
other mixture-offsetting device will be LTFT'd
back out. Are you sure this highway MPG doesn't
have a little bit of WOT in there, now and again?

Yeah, I do have some WOT in there, but not a whole lot...My main concern is the amount of build up on the tips. I thought I might be running too rich, and loosing some power.

The MAFT will help, and so will the predator. Are you going to change anything major in you set up? As far as the question you asked > Am I running rich > I'd say yes.

normal....if you are running premium fuel, (which you should be) there will be more carbon buildup in the exhaust. due to the additives in the fuel. it may sound that i am blowing smoke, but if you do more research you will believe me. running rich is unlikely at cruise, but at WOT it will be rich, (not a problem)

"Are you going to change anything major in you set up?"

Yes I just purchased an LS6 Cam and springs, and will be putting them in next week. I also have a transgo shift-kit, but can't find anyone that is willing to help me install that. Next month I will be getting headers and hi-flow cats, then I'm done. Maybe a converter next summer but not now. I will probably just go to MTI, after I install the cam and headers, and have them do a custom dyno tune. What do you guys think? Anyone know of somebody in Houston that knows what they are doing, and has LS1-edit, that might be cheaper than MTI.
