^^ Thank you for the explanation... do you think a dealer mechanic knows chemistry? Wouldn't they have to do that in a lab to have paper proof to back it up?

I don't know if they know chemistry, but I was a wrench for 15 years before getting into the education side of the business and I still don't know chemistry really well, but I do know how to read the instructions that are in the fuel sample kits. Rotunda, Kent-Moore, OTC, SPX Miller, etc all have very similar gas sample kits and reference checking for alcohol content in the fuel the same way.

It is pretty much a no brainer, and no its does not need to be done in a lab environment. You should look into these kits. Try an OTC p/n 7670, been around for years. Any good driveability tech takes fuel samples when he encounters a tip-in, hesistation problem or LEAN fuel trim codes (P0171, P0174) and now more than ever today due to E85 fuel possibly being in the tank when it is not supposed to.

I can't believe any dealer tech wouldn't be aware of how to use these kits.

No the 5.0L V8, it IS different than the other 5.0L of yesteryear. All of the later Ford motors are strange.
It sounds like the guy is backpeddling now. Lack of maintience=big money. He is trying to find an easy way out.
5.0L SOHC??? Never seen it They do put 4.6L SOHC V-8's in them.

Mercury mountaineers/ford explorers. Your right they were 4.6L, My bad. The Lincoln LS uses a strange V8. Had to work on a few of those too.
