Hello, if you use a spool it always makes the inside tire on a turn chirp or chatter. It is also a little tricky driving with a spool in wet weather. You will need to take corners easier than you would with a posi unit, but you get used to it. I drive around with a spool in my car. A good posi unit will handle 400-500 hp easily, but the locker is noisier than a tru trak. Everyones opinion is different. Some like the lockers some hate them, but they can handle more power than any other posi unit.

I had a spool and hated it. If you have a tire with alot of sidewall, its not that bad since the tire will absorb alot of the shock. But with street tires, the whole car would shake pretty bad while in parking lots or taking slow turns.

After sheering off the studs on my driver side rear axle (probably because the violent shaking of the rear vibrating the lugs loose) I went to a tru trac and havent had a single problem yet. However I do not race as often as I used to, i have made like 14 passes with the tru trac and some street races and havent had a problem at all

I was under the impression a locker would be trickier than a spool in wet weather and turns due to the locking/unlocking. Is this correct?

By alot of sidewall, do you mean our stock tire size (245/50/16) or do you mean a taller tire than stock?

A spool is fully locked all of the time. I had a locker in my older car and it is a little tricky in wet weather but so is the spool. Its going to depend on your driving style. Im sure thats not alot of help but your going to get different opinions from everone.

If you do a lot of intercity driving than I would go with a locker. If your driving is mostly rural or highway, than a spool works out real well. If you're making over 600 rwhp these two choices are really the only way to go. Bob

I was specifically referring to a 275 ET Street on a 15x8 Prostar wheel

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I'm going to go with a spool. I've heard bad things about the tru-tracs though those may be rare occurances. I kind of want the 35 spline axles anyway. I'm not even near the power levels where a locker or spool are required but may be in the future. I don't want to underbuild and have to redo things later, but I also don't want to overbuild and make my car a pain to drive. I bought it to drive it as much as possible. I rarely go into the city. I stick to suburbs and highway, so I think a spool will be alright.

Good luck. I hated the spool after driving it for a while, and my wife hated it more than I did. Luckily I didnt drive the car often though, but part of the reason for not driving it often was because of the spool.lol

What about over 600 rwhp and no drag racing just road racing autocross? I went with a tru trac for road racing.

For road racing and autocross the Tru Trac would be my first choice. I doubt you would have a problem with it and you are not shocking it like you would drag racing. Bob

If you want a locker, I have an airon moser 9 inch center section with quiet 3.70 gears and a locker for sale, for 31 spline axles, shoot me a PM if you're intrested.

Personally, I'd run an eaton diff, that you can rebuild when it goes, and if that starts giving you problems, put a spool in it. the trutrac diff's are absolute garbage, I've seen 2 get fragged in a 400 rwhp car now, as well as several other horror stories, if you are making enough power so an eaton HD isn't enough, put a spool in it and never have a problem again. That's my .02

if you wanted to downgrade from a locker to a truetac, would you have to change axles as well? (35 spline here)

Any major adjustments to the center section or just bolt in for that and for the axles a simple swap over of the pressed on stuff?
