Question Metal shards inside rear end

I was changing the fluid in my rear end last month and stuck to the magnet was this flattened piece of metal... i was wondering if anyone knew what part of the rear this could be. Car still seems to run fine but the whine seems to have of gotten worse. thx in advance for any help

Rear is a stock 10bolt with 3:42's in a 02SS

I am going to guess crush sleeve material as that is a common cause of 10 bolt failure. Sleeves collapses further allowing pinion to pull into the ring gear and POW you now have no gearset. That could also explain the whine getting louder the backlash has also opened up

I am guessing a very thin shim that worked its way loose. I have seen it before. Dont see how that can be a crush sleeve.

looks like to me your pinion bearing inner race had spun ,and pilled the pinion shim.

That's most likely a baffle... Shims aren't near that wide and crush sleeves are thicker (not to mention not that big around)....

Time for a rebuild!
