Default gear pattern help

hey guys, can someone check out my gear pattern and help me out with it. it doesnt really look like any of the ones on the charts I have found. The first 2 pictures are the drive side, the second 2 are the coast side. 4.10 motives in a S60. Also if you think I need to bring the pinion in or out further PLEASE reccomend how much you think it needs to be

drive side.

dont just look at where it is wearing through (black) but rather look at the whole smudge of where its contacting the yellow. if you refer to the jaws gear manual write up i believe it has some great picutres at the very end showing this exact pattern. this pattern looks good but could possibly move slightly towards the inner ring and a tad less towards the edge of the tooth. im no expert just my opinion.

http://www.jawsgear.com/tech_kits.php

download this manual then refer to page 18 and you will see the correct pattern at the top of that page and that looks like what you have.

also what is your backlash?

the pattern looks pretty good but .005 is a little tight on backlash. i set up some 4.10s in a 10 bolt last weekend and with the old bearing used as a mock up i was getting .008, Motive calls for .007-.009. when i changed it over to the new bearing for final assembly i rechecked it and it showed .006. that was the tightest i would have gone so i went ahead. about two hundred miles on it so far with no problems. i dont know if i would do .005 if they are calling for a minimum of .007.

ill post my final pictures here in a little bit. I had to add more shims for the pinion bearing preload also, which made the pinion set abit deeper and made the pattern better yet. Ill move the backlash back out to .008 and recheck the pattern and post final pictures.

ok, here is the final gear pattern. Its with .006 backlash (which is tight, but this is an M6 car and I figure it will relax abit after the new bearings wear in.) Its also after I set the pinion bearing preload correctly, and ended up using .050 worth of shims, because .055 was too loose, so figured .050 would be about perfect. its stiff to turn, but not hard. Anyhow, here is the pictures.

the pattern looks good but how are you setting pinion preload? i bought a inch/pound beam style torque wrench off ebay for about 50 bucks. it was a 1/4 inch drive so i made an adapter to go up to my pinion socket which was 1/2 drive. plug this into google and you will see what Im talking about 1/4in. Torque Beam Wrench KDT2955 also, i set my drag closer to 30 inch/pounds. i think Motive calls for 20-25 inch/pounds with new bearings then typically another 5-15 inch/pounds added once your posi is in place. i had 40 inch/pounds total after final assembly

i bought that exact wrench today and should have it mid week. But what I did was added .055 worth of pinion preload shims, and it was loose. Like could spin it with my hand and it would keep spinning for a second. I could just barelly feel some side to side movement, but no up and down movement. So I removed .005 worth, and took it down to .050 and it is now snug, but not hard to turn. it wont spin freely and has abit of resistance, but itsnt too tight. If I pull more out it will be too tight, so i kinda just stopped at the happy medium point.

The pattern actually looks a little deep. Not by much but maybe .002 to .003. Backlash is fine but I would pull a couple more thousandths out of your depth and you should be good.

check it with you torque wrench when you get it. 30 inch/pounds is pretty firm to turn by hand.
