Okay, I think my rear is done! HELP!
Hi all - I have a 2000 T/A, and have always heard a whine from the rear end, but it was never too bad so foolish me, I never thought much of it. Well last night coming home, doing 45 mph, my abs light popps on and then i hear this god awful; grinding sound from the back of the car. I pull over and now the car will go into gear, and the speedometer works, but all i get is that awful grinding sound with no movement! Please help!
I'm not too tech savy, I learn as I go basically, so please explain in lamens terms! Is it the gears? Or should i replace the whole rear end? I'm totally lost on this one, as I know NOTHING about rear ends. It's a 10 bolt by the way. Thanks!

The easiest and nicest way I can put it is, you need new gears. You can rebuild the stock rear end just fine. If you plan on racing the car, you are better off with buying a aftermarket 12 bolt or Ford 9" rear end. Do some research on this site. There is so much info.

If the car doesn't move, and the speedo is showing speed, it means the driveshaft is spinning but the wheels are not. The ABS light is on because its not getting speed reading from the rear wheels.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to be changing out the gears as it seems this is the most likely problem. Local speed shop wants to install 3.73 while we have the chance, so I guess I'M going that route. Atleast I get a new mod out of it all.
