what gears are best for 6speed for street/strip
i have a stock ls1 6speed right now. i will eventually put a turbo on it, but what is the best gear ratio for mostly street racing. what rpm are you running at 75-80mph?

A decision you're going to have to make is, do you want the best optimal gear now, and change later for the Turbo? Or go ahead and gear for the Turbo?
A 4:10 is going to be optimum for any N/A LS1 M6. Rpm's on the highway aren't even noticeable, especially if you're car is quiet. However if you're going to run FI, nothing higher than a 3:73.

For 0-60 racing you need two things: gearing and traction
I have 3.73 in my car now and can break the tires loose in a straight line any time in first and midway through second.
4.10 gears are going to make it impossible to get traction without tires.
With tires, you will soon blow apart your stock rear.
Even if you are really going to turbo your car later, save yourself some trouble and get a higher strength rear now with 4.10 gears and a set of sticky tires (maybe on some 17x11's). That'll help your 0-60 times and your peace of mind when you decide to really go big. And getting a fully set up turbo for this car is a HUGE expense compared to changing the gear ratio. My way you'll get to enjoy your car while waiting for the rest of your mod $$$.
With 3.73 gears I run 2000 rpm at 80 mph. The gears are not really short compared to 3.42. I didn't put the gears in this car. If I had, I would have went to 4.10 because the jump from 3.42 to 3.73 isn't big enough to justify the expense IMO. It really helps from a 3rd gear roll though! It's just at the begining of 3rd at about 65 mph.
Here is all the info you'll need to calculate your rpms with any gear/trans/tire combo you can imagine.

You also have to consider tire height with your gear ratio - both street and strip. My personal prefference for both situations is a 4.30 gear. Perfect for a H/C car with 27'' tall hoosiers, and still not bad on the highway for a 6 speed car.

i dont have a stock rear end. my car was originally drag raced before i bought it. i have a 68 camaro with 12 bolt rear end. right now i have traction bars and leaf springs on there. im wondering if i should put latterbars on. i have them sitting in the garage. they came with the car. i dont know how that would ride.

I really like my 4.10s... makes the car much more lively. Although traction does suck with my winter tires on... makes me miss my summer Nitto DRs.
I agree with everyone else though... if you have big plans for forced induction later on, you may be better served to save money for a 12 bolt. I plan on doing just bolt-ons for at least the next year and a half or so, so the 4.10 gears are fine for my purposes.

Anyway...
If you have 2 sets of gears in the garage, go ahead and try out the 4.56. Hell, that's like a 2.28 rear end ratio in 6th, which is still higher than many modded cars (definately higher than a stock 1st gen camaro!), and liveable on the highway with the kind of rear tires you'll need to hook with that much torque to the pavement.
I also recomend a Pro 5.0 shifter, because you will be shifting a LOT
What gear ratio is the car now?

Is it common to have to say the same thing to every single person around here?
It'd be quicker to send individual PM's instead of posting to people like you!
NOTICE I JUST MADE ALMOST THIS EXACT POST TOWARDS ANOTHER PERSON WHO DIDN'T EVEN TAKE THE TIME TO READ THE THREAD

so with a 12 bolt rear end and 4.10 gears and slick in my 6speed you think ill run 12's. in my 3300lbs car with driver. high are low 12's. in the 1/8th mile, people say for every 100lbs you loose a tenth on a second. this is what most people ive taked to go by. is the 1/4 mile any different. will it still be a tenth or will it be a bigger differnce. most camaros weigh what 3700lbs with driver. and run 13.1 on street tires with stock rear ends and gears. just take 5 tenths off and im runnning 12.6 quarter. add slick and that putts me at what, 12.3? change stock gears to 4.10 and that puts me at what, 12.0? does this sound way off. is this just wishful thinking or what.
