Would my 10 bolt fit on a YJ jeep?
I plan on giving my stock 10 bolt rear to my buddy who has a 92 YJ jeep wrangler when I do my 8.8/12 bolt swap. He has asked the people on the jeep forums if they had any idea if it would fit, and has come up empty-handed.
I was wondering if anyone here new if it would fit ... we know it has the same bolt-pattern and looks like it would fit, but we're not positive.
Any info?

Fitting an axle on a 4x4 is quite a bit easier than swapping one on a car with 4" of ground clearance and 3-4" around the tires.
Yes, it will fit. Just measure. If the leaf springs clear on each side, you'll be fine.
Should he do it? Hell no.
That axle isn't ideal in a YJ for any number of reasons.
If he's putting tires on it, he'll break it. (hint: why are you swapping this axle out?) And if he isn't putting tires on it, why does he need a new axle?
An explorer 8.8 would be the axle he wants for cheap + strength. Same bolt pattern, proven easy fit, etc.
Messing with that 10 bolt is more trouble that its worth.

Well he really wants it for the gears ... so would it maybe be better for me to just give him my gears, have him throw them in his current differential, and then just selling my gearless axles and crap?

Oh. Haha you really had me thinking there. Swapping out a 10 bolt for a 10 bolt, and wondering if the new 10 bolt would fit
No, the gears won't interchange between axles.
Gears for what he wants are pretty cheap.
But I'm still confused.
Why does he need a new gear ratio in the rear axle?
Does he have a different ratio in his front axle?

Well, he has large tires on there (31" i think ..) so he wants 4:10's .... but to do a gear swap in 2 axles is somewhat costly ... so I figured since I was getting rid of my 10 bolt he could have it ... if it would work, that way he would only have to do the gear swap in the front differential, which would cut down the cost alot.

there is some questionable inforamation up in this thread...
the explorers use the same bolt pattern as the mustang, 5 by 4.5
The stock 10 bolt, f-cars use 5 by 4.75
if the explorer 8.8 would work correct, then the 10 bolt would not... or the other way around...
But to answer the above question.... it is NOT worth trying to install a POS 10 bolt into a jeep, find a large dana for the jeep, it will be better than installing the 4 banger S10.... (i mean ls1) rearend into the jeep, and having it fail..
I have thought of the other way around, taking the dana out of my brothers jeep, and into my car... but never thought of the other way around (unless it was because the jeep was rearend less, due to the strong dana being in my car... he he)

Yeah I did some reading on it and realized the dana that he has in there now is probably equal to or stronger then my 10 bolt (for rock climbing and off-roading at least). So basically it was a nice idea, but not going to happen.
Thanks for the help guys.
