Default 12 bolt/ 9 inch guys...i need some advice

ok so i've been doing a lot of searching and it seems like moser or strange are both equally good options. I'm on a 2000 dollar budget and i can't seem to find any deals used so maybe i could get a new one...I just have basic bolt ons but while i have the cash i'd like to get the rear done. so what would be some options for me and also what do 4.10/ 4.11's do in 6th gear at around 70(interstate driving)

thanks in advance fellas

I dont know of a place that sells them for $2000 new, but if you find one let me know.

4.10/4.11 in an m6 i have read is perfectly fine for highway. in an auto, your over 2k rpms which is just terrible. my dad has a jeep that runs like 3k rmps on the interstate and he gets 17 to the highway.

from what i hear moser is better for both 12bolt and 9inch but that was just one guy's opinion on here.

You could piece together a 9" for less than $2k, just get the moser housing/axle package for a grand and then piece your own third member together.

Yeah, you have to use your backing plates off your 10 bolt..... They are what holds the axle in.....

I broke a 12 bolt and went with a Moser 9 inch..... I have about $1850 in mine and everything was bought new..... I got a Moser housing and axle package with 35 spline axles..... I got a Strange Pro Case, with a spool, Aluminum Pinion Support, Yukon 4.11 gear, Timken Bearings, and got some relocation brackets.... I bought it from a non sponsor though....

Of course we set the third member up ourselves, and welded the relocation brackets on ourselves also.... If you can do it yourself you can save some money.... Everything I got was brand new... Of course you wont have ABS, but I don't need it...

The above link has is for the Moser nine inch housing and axle package for $1100.00 shipped. Lower control arm relocation brackets already welded in are no extra charge! This housing is ready to bolt into your chassis, all the brackets are on it for the panhard bar, lower control arms, torque arm bracket is installed, etc. For now you could just buy a junkyard center section, bolt it in, reuse your 10 bolts brake backing plates, install the brakes off your 10 bolt, and you're off and running. From personal experience, I'd go with the strange over the moser, and get a 9".
Sucks when you break a Moser 12-bolt cruising on the highway with less than 3000 miles on it and they won't do a damn thing for you about it in terms of fixing it...

I know for abs you just don't put the ring on and thats all good but what about tcs?

All of that's going to come down to how you get the rear setup. Depending on the year, it will be a little different, but basically you will have reluctor rings that sense wheelspeed and use that to control ABS and TCS. It varies from year to year so I would talk to whoever you plan on buying the rear from. IMHO it's worth getting it with both ABS and TCS so you don't have the lights on all the time, and I think (not sure in SC) you'll fail inspection automatically if you have an ABS INOP light on. I think it's a $100 to $200 option depending on whether you reuse the reluctors or get new ones.

I'm glad I got ABS and TCS on mine even though 99% of the time I have the traction control off. It's just piece of mind to have it I guess, and you can always turn it off.

And in terms of your question about RPM at 70mph since you're a 6-speed (or I at least assume from the "Pro 5.0" in your sig ) You'll be right at 1900. 80 mph will be 2200.

I know it's from F-Body.org, but here's a link to a pretty good speed/gear ratio calculator:

i got a Moser 9" and i havent had a single problem. quiet on the highway and i can dump it (in an M6) at 7K and not even worry about it. you could build one up for less than 2 grand if you have access to a buddy who can weld. i fabbed the 9 in my old third gen from an early Ford 9" and all i had to replace was gears (went with 4.11s) Moser 33 spline axles, and spool. built it for less than a grand.

my dad did that in an old monza he had back in the day when i was younger. got a rear out of the junkyard and shortened the axle tubes and a few other goods a built it for a total of like 200 or 250 dollars. that was back in the day when everything was a hell of a lot cheaper though. i found a local guy with one...i just need to know what i can do about it not have abs/tcs when that's what my car is set up with

You can get the axles machines for the reluctor rings. Moser can do this for you, then you can either reuse the reluctor rings off your 10 bolt axles or Moser can supply you with new ones for $75.00. 260 726-6689 is their number Bob
