Did you ever have driveshaft or u joint problems? I know the pinion is offset in the hoghead an 1/8" more than the LS rear. I'm wondering if that would cause problems?

The offset to the side is fine since it is not drastic.

I didn't think mattered too much. I know some guy's with lowered cars have to run an adjustable phb to get their rear centered back up.

how much lighter was the 8.8 compared to the 10bolt?

i had a setup similar to this in my 98 trans am like 6yrs ago, but with a 9" rear. bought it from a friend of mine. that short ladderbar setup plants the tires well. I used to mindf*ck people at the track all of the time, because instead of the body squatting with the torque arm setup, the body would actually raise up when I'd take off. I was told that happened because it would plant the tires so well, and the tires certainly wont go thru the pavement, so the *** end of the body would liift up.

the cons- i believe it blew my rear shocks, and definately snapped both of my tubular LCAs in half one night on the street when i was launching it, which in turn snapped the driveshaft. be careful. it puts alot of stress on them.

Im going to be doing an 8.8 build with a disc brake rear from a ford explorer (31spline axles stock ) I plan on using a spool & 4.10 gears, and will go with a torque arm setup similar to the one found on a MWC fab 9. Whenever I get started on it, I'll post my build as well.

I don't believe any version of the 8.8 is lighter than the 10-bolt. Within the 8.8 family the Mustang 8.8 looks a little lighter than the Exploder version but not much.

I see. I was thinking about throwing a spool in a 8.8 rear to help offset the weight difference, whatever it may be

So what all modifications did you have to do besides the different ujoint to fit the yoke? Hiltsy855 my 8.8 showed up today so when i get home i will look and see if maybe your bracket will be able to fit a mustang rear.

Just a quick question. I am thinking about doing this swap and was just wondering if anybody could help me out a little bit. My idea for this swap was to get a mustang 8.8 rear housing with an explorer center section with 4.10 gear and then mosers custom 31 spline 5 x 4.75 axles. Now if i go that route would that work? I notice alot of people saying that you have to weld the 10 bolt axle tubes to the 8.8" by getting the OD of the 10 bolt to fit in the ID of the 8.8" snuggly. Would I have to weld the 10 bolt axle tubes to the 8.8" if i purchased the custom axles from moser?

So is the mustang rear the same width as a 4th gen rear?

How is the ladder bar setup working out? Anyone else try it?

Ok, so essentially he now has a narrowed rear. Which makes sense with the large tires and the offsets he chose.

That stinks though, I was hoping I wouldn't have to cut tubes or use a truing bar, or any of that. I guess I do.

How does the width of an explorer rear compare to a 4th gen?

EDIT: Here's a GREAT thread from thirdgen.org on 8.8 swaps. I'm not even done reading it myself but thought I'd share.

The explorer is offset to one side. Cant remember what side is what but one is 2" narrower and the other side is 4" narrow. Why would you have to cut the mustang rear? If your buying wheels buy the offset needed and ford pattern. Use the mustang axles brakes and hardware.

Not buying custom wheels. I'd like to stick with my stockers.
