I have an M6 and I'm going to have to step down to 3.54s in my Dana.

I chose 4.11 when I got my 9". With that and shitty bald *** tires, the inside of my car always smells like burnt rubber.. It's pretty bad ***. Gas mileage in town has gone down a couple MPG's in town, but highway there was a negligible difference.

Yea I would imagine 4.10's in an A4 would be kinda drastic.

And I noticed your in Ft. Stewart, I just moved from down there a few months ago.. Dont remember seeing your f-bod though..

4.56's aren't anything in the muscle car world... a little unheard of in a 10 bolt, lol. In 1969 you could order a camaro with as low as 4.88 gears, no OD, only 1:1 (just like an A4 3rd gear and an M6 4th gear).

the 4.56s' in A4 put me at about 2900(ScanGaugeII readout) at freeway legal speeds. In Nov.of 2008 on a return trip from Florida, hooked up with a fast moving group of cars in S.C. and was in cruise control for about an hour at 4000rpm.High rpm doesn't bother me.Rounding values out,1000rpm could be considered the low operating end of an LS engine and 6000rpm could be the high operating end of an LS engine(we're talking stock values). The middle of that range is 3500rpm,what could be better(disregarding mpg) than operating an engine near its' designed operating range center.

I went from 2.73's to 3.73's. Traction is a serious problem for me, though. If wonder if they still make 3.42's. 3.23's was quite common at one time, too. I guess, in aftermarket world, you can likely get about any ratio you want.

Choices are pretty limited in a 10 bolt. A 9" probably has about the best selection of gears since its pretty much the most used rear end across the broad range of racing circuits.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think the ring gear teeth stay about the same for 10 bolt rear ends, just the pinion gear teeth:

4.56 gears = 41 ring gear teeth, 9 pinion teeth
4.10 gears = 41 ring gear teeth, 10 pinion teeth
3.73 gears = 41 rg, 11 p
3.42 gears = 41 rg, 12 p
2.73 gears = 41 rg, 15 p

I'm not sure what combo they used for the 3.23 gears, or the 3.90 gears in an isuzu 10 bolt.

Im also not even sure of the relevance of this information Just something to think about, lol.

my car had 3.73 gears and with 26 inch tires it would be at around 2400 @ 70 mph and 2800 @ 80 mph, i wanted more gear to say the least. 410-456.

So i finished up my 4.10's today.... Am I happy that i went with them instead of 3.73's? This thing is NASTY. Cant wait to hit the track this weekend. I was sooooo slow off the line with those 2.73's. I am glad i went 4.10's, didnt wanna be kickin myself in a few weeks for going 3.73. This has waken this car up ALOT!!! But I've said it before, i rarely see much highway driving in this car, longest drive i make is to Royal Purple Raceway. My recommendation on 4.10's in an A4?

I've been saying that for years. I used to daily drive a big block with 4.11s in a 68 pontiac tempest, with no OD. Back in the 60's and 70's it wasn't uncommon for cars to turn 3500 rpm at 55mph on their way to work every day. With that in mind, it's not too bad when it hits 4th gear out on the road is it? It's definitely not like stock, but you could easily road trip it. It feels like a beast out of the hole, doesn't it?

I wrote a thread about building a fun A4 car and it was all centered around 4.10 gears. They're the cheapest butt-o-meter gain you can possibly do to a car, and I'm pretty unmovable that they're the best gear for any Fbody... except forced induction cars.

Congrats!

I like my 4.10s. I went from a best of 12.69 @ 109 to 12.30 @ 113 with just the gear change.

well I"m about to try the switch myself. have 3.73s in my 10 bolt. will be installing a moser 12 with 4.11 in a wk or so. was looking to purchase some 3.73s bc i was and still am worried about drivability. But I rarely drive the car as is, much less on a long drive. After reading some threads here, i feel a little more excited about the trying the 4.11s. If I dont like it, it'll be easier to just throw some 28" tires on there, than swapping gears. may do the tire swap anyway just for better traction..... Cant wait for the new rear!!!!!!

That's what I had in my A4 before switching to 3.73s. When I had 28 inch tall tires it was fine cruising down the highway, but when I went to my current tires (around 26.5 inches tall) my highway cruising rpms were around 2600 at 65mph. Rather than wanting to cruise around 3k all the time, I switched to 3.73s to get get better cruising mileage. I saw my mileage go from 15 to over 17 after the swap, but I do miss the seat of the pants acceleration and throttle response from a stand-still. Overall, I'm happy with my 3.73s. If you're not planning on getting a larger diameter tire, and you ARE planning on a lot of highway trips 3.73s seem like the choice to me.
I mean, in my limited mechanical knowledge it seems like the higher the rpm that you stay at when cruising the more wear & tear on the engine. But that's just IMO
