10 bolt gear pattern check
I recently bought summit 4.10 gear in a move from the stock 3.42 that have already been rebuilt once. 99k miles on M6. I have set the pinion shim to 0.020" and backlash to 0.009". I feel that I need to take some pinion shim out and move to 0.015". I checked the pattern and think it is not that good. I know the axle housing can mess with the the pattern and the flank to face is the major concern in the setup. I am just not happy with the set up. Plan to rework some more.

I will give that shot. I bought an extra pinion bearing and hollowed it out for set up only, so changing the shim is a quick operation.
Some say they don't use a crush sleeve during trails, but I have on my work. I will post more with the different setup. thanks

def shallow, it might need more then .030 but you'll have to check. What size shim was used on the old gear set? I ussually start with that one because they are spot on 90% of the time. I would match or reuse that one to start and then recheck

I just started using the set up bearing concept and it makes it MUCH easier than pressing on/off the pinion bearing. I spent the $25 on a new bearing. Does a new one have the same effect on the BL as used one would have? Either way I think the extra $25 spent in the extra bearing is worth its weight in gold. Thanks for the tip on the - BL adjustment

well a new one should yield the same results. I used a 100k bearing as my mock up. I noticed when going from the 100k to a brand new bearing yielded about a .001 reduction in backlash.

I adjusted the pinion shim to 0.030
see the photos attached. it looks better. the face to flank pattern looks better. backlash is set to 0.008 as the ring gear set is marked to at the factory.
The pattern does not line up exactly with how it was done at the factory (they ran it at the factory and you can see the pattern that was laid down is more "flat").
Let me know your thoughts.

my 2 cents - although i am not an expert by any means, so take what i say with a grain of salt...
I had a hard time reading the teeth you marked, so perhaps like wrd1972 mentioned - try thinning it....
... but if i looked at the subsequent teeth where the marking compound got transferred on to, I thought the coast side pattern was fairly centered face to flange, and perhaps slightly favors the heel.

IMO...The drive side favors the toe, and really looks like it favors the face of the gear.
I thought i have read that some installers look only to get the backlash set and then center the pattern between face and flange (root)???
At any rate - curious as to the outcome - for my own info...

I am usually less concerned with the centered on both sides pattern. I look for a defined oval (cloud) on the tooth first then try to center things up. I have had defined ovals but coast was more heel and drive was more toe and it worked fine. Coverage of the pattern is more important as compared to position on the tooth.

I am seeing more toe on drive and heel on coast. I do agree I would like a better pattern...flatter tooth contact. I was originally going to try and add 0.010 to the pinion shim and just try and overshoot it, but I think I will try 0.005 and see if I can get it spot on. HA!

Next setup was with 0.039" on pinion shim and 0.008 - 0.009 BL...buttoned it up and took it for a spin. It sounded like a 50s cop car was chasing me. It whinned under all conditions.
I know they say that some 4.10 just whine, but I really don't want to accept that.

damn... good times
In the 3rd pic it still looks shallow though, a little whine at a near closed throttle cruising speed is acceptible but you descrided it to be worse so I would advise you pull her apart..
I would re check your back lash before you pull the caps off just be sure you didnt over look something. Are you checking BL with the caps torqued? you should be if not.
try a little more pinion shim and tighten the BL to .007 your pattern should look better..

caps were torqued when I was checking the BL. I guess I will add more pinion shim. I was going to take to to 0.060 just so I could hopefully take it to the other side and then work in from there. This chasing it 0.005 at a time without an end is sight is driving me to drink. thanks for the input
