Default Any other way to tell what gears I have?

I don't have an RPO code sticker on my door or in my glove box. After reading that stickies the general consensus was that with 3.23s, 2000 RPM=67 mph, and with 2.73s, 2000rpm=80 mph. I'm right in between. My tach is reading 1800-1900 rpm at 70 mph, and 2100-2200 rpm at 80 mph.

Does the tach tend to read a little in one direction or another? I'm thinking I may call a dealer and see if they could tell me what gears I have from the VIN. Thoughts?

sounds like 2.73s to me I read somewhere that if you put your car in 3rd gear and go 70mph your rpms will tell you what gears you have 2.73s you will be at 2700 to 2900 rmpms and 3.23s you be at 3200 rpms and so on I tried it and it does work

the stock tach in these cars is horrible, mine reads about 200 rpm high at idle, and almost 400 rpm high when i get up around 6k rpm.

Yeah, I was running 2700 rpm at 70 mph. Given what I am hearing, it seems that since I'm starting with 2.73s, going to 3.73's in the future would be a sound investment.

I tried this. When in 4th, i was right at 67mph at 2000rpm

When I went into third, I was right about 3000rpm at 70mph. What do you say to that?

That's what I figured, but I wonder why I was at 3000rpm instead of 3200...

Tachs are off in these cars....if you really want to know for sure, the exact same concept can be performed in your driveway. Jack the car up and have a friend rotate the wheel 1 full turn while you are under the car counting exactly how many times the driveshaft turns. Example....1 full tire rotation = 3.75 turns of the pinion. 3.73 is your answer. This is why the third gear, speedo method works. 3rd gear is 1:1 in auto, 4th in 6 speed. So for a 6 speed car it should be 4th gear @ 70mph

actually, if you really want to know for sure, pull the cover and read the numbers on the ring gear....

Not all gear sets have the ratio stamped, in fact most gear sets only have a part number for the ring and/or pinion. Jacking the car up is just as accurate and saves fluid.

you don't need to go thru the hassle of driving in the highway to a certain speed and seeing what it does or taking the lid off the rear. This website will tell you what options came in your car when it was made by simply pluggin your vin in the designated area. Its accurate as i double checked the results with my door decal.

the only way to be 100% sure is to pull the cover off and count all the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion and divide them... if you had 41 teeth on the ring gear and 11 on the pinion, you would divide them and come up with 4.10 ...
