Default Pinion depth adjustment needed after very hard shift?? wtf??

I hit 2nd gear instead of fourth last week, and instantly my 10 bolt growled.
I nursed it home and pulled the cover to see the carnage. to my suprise all was in tact, the only issue was my contact pattern was now only contacting 1/4 inch on the inside of the ring gear? so now, Ive added shims to total 0.010 to the pinion with a decent pattern. thats the stock .030, plus .040, and .030
I need to dial in the backlash, but im closer with all that shiming than any less shim configuration. btw, These gears are like new freshy broken in AAM gears. originally I used the stock pinion shim when i set the gears up and all was fine, no whine, etc. That 2nd gear hit changed the whole gear configuration and set up. has any one heard of, or seen this before??? alittle insite would be appreciated......
thanks stunna..

The case in the 10 bolt flexes, and the pinion gear is able to sheer away from the ring gear, which will either break your ten bolt,as your is about to do,or it will move things all over the place.start saving for a stronger rear, try to repair your 10 bolt if you want, but do it as cheap as possible, cuz it will not last
