Question Carrier types? Which one do I have?

Ive been reading in other forums and such about series two and series three carrier type rear ends. I have been contimplating on getting a 3.73 gear upgrade for my car but I do not know what carrier I have and how to distinguish the difference. So...
A) What is the difference in series 2 vs series 3
B) What series do I have?

I have a 2001 Trans Am WS6 A4 currently w/ 3.23s stock rearend

2.73 3.08 = series 2, 3.23 3.42 3.73 = series 3,, you should have a series 3.

Go figure seemed easy enough. But why have a difference and what makes the difference? Just out for some knowledge.

I thought all automatic rear ends were series 2, and manual rear were series 3. No?

Automatics were 2.73 (option code GU2) standard and 3.23 (option code GU5) with the performance rear axle.
