My 98 Trans Am Convertible has stock 2.73 gears. Its automatic non ws6. I belive ws6 cars had 3.23 gears. Can I switch to these gears with out any problems. What do I need to do to carrect speedometer, ect..
Also it it worth the change. What gains wil I see. This car is a weekend driver only. The engene is stock. It has slp loudmouth exhusat, and basic suspention stiffeners (subframe connecters, pan bar.

2.73s' are on a 2 series carrier,OEM 3.23s' are for a 3 series carrier. If you're just changing the gears and using the 2 series carrier, you would need an afermarket set of 3.23 gears(referred to as 'thick gears') for a 2 series carrier. If you're using OEM 3.23 gears and the 3 series carrier that they were on,direct swap but pinion depth and backlash would still have to be setup.
You didn't say if the vehicle is ABS only or ABS & traction control.
Speedometer can be corrected with a 'handheld tuner' or take it to someone that can do it.
You'll feel the difference because of the 18% increase in torque to the axles/tires.
MPG will probably drop by 15%.

do you plan on re-using the 2 series carrier that the 2.73s' are on or are you planning on getting a 3 series carrier for the replacement gearset ?

the carrier is the differential. As stated in my original reply, you would need an aftermarket set of 'thick' gears,OEM 3.23s' will not work with your 2 series carrier.
Any of the sponsor vendors that deal in gearsets can/should be able to provide the proper set.
Jaws Gears & Axle(one of ls1tech sponsors) only lists available 'thick' (for 2 series carrier) gearsets in ratios of 3.42,3.73,& 4.10.

a rearend rebuild kit/package (pinion seal, pinion bearings, crush sleeve, pinion shims, pinion nut, carrier bearings, carrier shims),rearend cover gasket, potential replacement of axle bearings(definitely not the axle saver bearing replacement kit) would be recommended.
AND someone qualified(plenty of horror stories on this topic) with the proper tools to do it right.
