Default Swapping gears from a 3rd gen to a 4th?

Ok here is my question. I have a 2000 Z with stock 2.73s. I know where there is a 83 Z with 3.73s. The guy told me I could have the rear end if I could use it. Is there a way I can swap out the gears on these cars? My car has abs and traction control. Im not wanting to swap the entire rear end, I just want the gears. Can it be done easily?

I think the 83 is still a 7.5" which is not as good prob uses the gov-explode posi this is a waist in itself , axle spline is less than yours so no go there even if you wanted to watch parts fly! so in short nothing good for you there if you grabbed the ring and pinion and used the correct posi (yours wont work due to the series in itself) best bet if you want to be cheap buy the thick gears from summit

83 gears are 7.5" which is the same as if you ordered aftermarket 3.73 gears.
Since in your post, you want to use only the gears,IF they were for the same carrier series they would be a compatible swap. BUT they're probably NOT because the 2.73s' require and are on a 2 series carrier,in 1983 3.73s' were a factory option and would be on a 3 series carrier. 3 series 3.73s' would not be applicable to use on a 2 series carrier.

Get the gears out of the rear end, buy a spacer kit to make it work on your posi and install the ****. These guys get so over-technical sometimes.

yes thats the one however its not a recommended thing because it takes integrity away from the setup strength some people run them without issues others snap them llike twigs its just luck and how hard you run the car.
