Default Rebuilding the 10 bolt....

So, I figure since my rear has 160,xxx on it, and I'm installing gears, i might as well rebuild it...

Im thinking...

28 spline Moser axels

Eaton Posi Limited Slip Differential

3.73 or 3.90 gears

T/A Rear End Girdle

...... Good idea? Bad Idea? Input please....

Bad idea. Waste of money, save up and purchase a 12 bolt or 9 inch.

They're too expensive... My car is gonna be a bolt on DD with a few suspension mods [LCA, etc]...

I thought a rebuilt 10 bolt would hold up to bolt ons

Is the car an auto or manual? Going to the track? Sticky tires?

Manual. Might see the track 3 or 4 times a year. I refuse to use DR's on the 10 bolt since its my only car.

No DR's ok that should help with keeping the 10 bolt alive, but in my honest opinion you are on borrowed time even on street tires. I personally would not invest the money in it. Continue to save your money and you can find a decent priced used 12 bolt on here if you are patient enough.

The 10 bolt rear in manual cars have proven themselves time and time again to be unreliable even with stock power. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping for more input although now I'm thinking of not rebuilding it. Damnit.

Have a muffler shop weld on your axel tubes. In addition to your other mods.

Coming from someone who's had horrible luck with their 10 bolt, I'm gonna say don't even bother with it. Save up for something that will never break.

...however, if you can't hold out and you're wanting to save even more money, there's no real reason to buy the axles since you'll melt the gears first. IMHO.

I only bought axles for the 87 because i had to go from 26 to 28 splines...but if I would have forseen all the trouble I was going to have over the next few yrs I could have SAVED money on buying a 9 inch instead.

Axles arent a weakpoint. Its the gears. Weld the tubes and put in a rebuild kit and call it a day. My differential is shot so ill rebuilt it with 3.73s, weld the tubes and call it a day.

This is what was done to mine plus tubes welded & its held up fine , 2 years and a lot of track passes, BUT I have a A4. With a M6 and NO drag radials maybe. If it was me I would save up and look for a 12 bolt.

The tubes that are in the "pumpkin" are pressed in. Weld that whole assembly together.

I just blew the 10 bolt, on some low profile street tires, that didn't hook from anything below a 40. Shattered every tooth off the pinion on a hard 2-3 shift. Never had drag radials on the car.

I just started looking for a decent used 12 bolt, its worth the extra money, not only that you can run a higher gear ,beat on it all you want and it will be fine,I just don't see the point in getting a cover, having the tubes welded, paying someone to rebuild it ( I don't do rearends) and buy gears also, then knowing your days are still numbered, and a lil more cash could get ya something you don't have to worry about, and then you can get a set of drs and have fun at the track instead of spinning 1st threw 3rd,its a important part in these cars, texas speed has a 10 bolt upgrade package if your dead set on doing your 10 bolt but don't make us say we told you so,trust me when I first started mods a rearend wasn't on my mind ,now I kinda wish I would have done it first,

Just put it this way 10 bolt = fail,10 bolt rebuilt with anything you can think of = fail, with your car beeing a m6 it just makes a fail design even worse,

add a Girdle to your list

the first time i broke my 10 bolt was with basically stock power (6 speed car) and a girdle probably would have saved it.

how much "borrowed time" can a DD with 160,000 miles on a stock 10 bolt really be, if he's not beating the sh.. out of it?
