Rebuilding the 10 bolt....
So, I figure since my rear has 160,xxx on it, and I'm installing gears, i might as well rebuild it...
Im thinking...
28 spline Moser axels
Eaton Posi Limited Slip Differential
3.73 or 3.90 gears
T/A Rear End Girdle
...... Good idea? Bad Idea? Input please....

The 10 bolt rear in manual cars have proven themselves time and time again to be unreliable even with stock power. Good luck in your decision.

Coming from someone who's had horrible luck with their 10 bolt, I'm gonna say don't even bother with it. Save up for something that will never break.
...however, if you can't hold out and you're wanting to save even more money, there's no real reason to buy the axles since you'll melt the gears first. IMHO.
I only bought axles for the 87 because i had to go from 26 to 28 splines...but if I would have forseen all the trouble I was going to have over the next few yrs I could have SAVED money on buying a 9 inch instead.

Axles arent a weakpoint. Its the gears. Weld the tubes and put in a rebuild kit and call it a day. My differential is shot so ill rebuilt it with 3.73s, weld the tubes and call it a day.

This is what was done to mine plus tubes welded & its held up fine , 2 years and a lot of track passes, BUT I have a A4. With a M6 and NO drag radials maybe. If it was me I would save up and look for a 12 bolt.

I just blew the 10 bolt, on some low profile street tires, that didn't hook from anything below a 40. Shattered every tooth off the pinion on a hard 2-3 shift. Never had drag radials on the car.

I just started looking for a decent used 12 bolt, its worth the extra money, not only that you can run a higher gear ,beat on it all you want and it will be fine,I just don't see the point in getting a cover, having the tubes welded, paying someone to rebuild it ( I don't do rearends) and buy gears also, then knowing your days are still numbered, and a lil more cash could get ya something you don't have to worry about, and then you can get a set of drs and have fun at the track instead of spinning 1st threw 3rd,its a important part in these cars, texas speed has a 10 bolt upgrade package if your dead set on doing your 10 bolt but don't make us say we told you so,trust me when I first started mods a rearend wasn't on my mind ,now I kinda wish I would have done it first,
