Question Gear Whine

My pinion seal was leaking pretty bad...and reading all the posts, it seems to be a common problem....anyways, i had it fixed and changed the oil...they used Mobil 1 gear oil with the additive already mixed in it....now i get the loudest whine ever....its very noticable, what happened? Were they supposed to use regular gear oil and a separate bottle additive, or was it alright that they used the Mobil 1 with the additive already in the bottle?
Or is it just whining cuz its not leaking the oil and its full now??? Anybody?

Did they pull the carrier out of the housing? They probably screwed up the preload on the pinion bearings. The only way to correctly change a pinion seal is to pull the carrier out and tighten the pinion nut while checking the bearing preload with the carrier removed, something very few shops will do.

I dont understand? the Carrier? U mean the whole gear assembly?? I dont think they did...i know they had to pull the universal off the rear end and stuff to get to the seal...Is the whine normal...BTW, i have 105k miles on my car

The carrier is the assembly that the ring gear bolts to. If it didn't whine before being worked on, why would the whine be normal now. Sounds like you got the half *** pinion seal change that most shops do to save on labor to do it right.

Zexel/Torsen carriers do not require the additive. Only clutch type carriers actually require it. It is sometimes recommended for Z/T rear ends when customers complain about mechanical noises that a Z/T can make. Regardless, gear lube with or without posi additive does not cause gear whine.

Preload. Instead of pulling the entire carrier assembly like they should to do it right, a lot of shops just drop the drive shaft, pull the pinion nut and yoke, then replace the seal. You can't set the proper pre-load this way. The crush sleave is there to set the preload....once it's been crushed,(the original time the gears were set up at the factory) you need to replace it if the pinion nut is removed.(thus taking any preload off of the bearings) With the ring gear still in the case, you can't can't correctly run the pinion nut down to an accurate inch pound measurement because you are working against the ring gear. Just my .02

Hate to jump in here but I got whiny gears too. I was always told by gearheads before me that once the gears are setup and are worn in that any present noise is permanent until you buy new gears. Is that true? Or can I have my gear noise fixed? Would be an opportune time to fix my leaky pinion seal too (which seems to be VERY COMMON). If anyone is a pro on this, shoot me an e-mail or a pvt. message, I'd love to know.

You are correct....once the wear pattern is established, there isn't any going back. The only real "fix" is to set up a new set of gears.
