Default Driveshaft install, how much play?

I had cracked a bellhousing recently on a TH400 transmission. That has been fixed, problem solved. But when I put the driveshaft back in, I noticed that there was very little distance between the driveshaft and the yoke before bolting it up. I thought there was supposed to be somewhere around 3/4" to 1" gap to allow the driveshaft to slide back and bolt up to the yoke. There is probably less than 1/4", which I feel might be loading the transmission in a way that it cracked the bell housing when launching hard at the track. Should I be worried about this?

Yes that is way to close! It should be atleast 1" to 3/4 inches! When the back of the car goes down like when you launch it hard, the driveshaft slides forward. A 1/4 of play and there will be bad news!!

Make sure you're checking for the .75 distance with the rear tires in the loaded position. Bob
