How much is enough? stock v aftermarket
So I haven't done a very good job of following the age-old advice of building your car from the rear forward. This has left me with a broken rear axle. It wasn't the power that made it die, so much as a bad seal. Water worked its way into the axle and a few teeth were sheared off the pinion.
At this point there is a broken Camaro in my driveway...again. So the question becomes...how much is enough? Intent for this vehicle is 100% street use. Since the engine rebuild the tires really don't hook up, so some bigger rubber is coming in the future. However, chances of this car ever seeing a dragstrip are slim. Likely mods in the future include slicks and traction upgrades. Current package is 400ish HP with an M6 transmission.
I was all set to dole out the big bucks for an aftermarket rearend. I called Summit and spoke to someone on their tech line. His comment "You don't need this much axle unless you're racing that thing every weekend". This goes contrary to the advice of most folks on this forum and the shop that I took the car to for an axle rebuild. So help me out, please. I would go ahead with the aftermarket install except that the Summit rep shook my faith that this is the correct solution for me.
Option 1: Stock rebuild. Shop estimate is $600 and this would address the bearings and such that have worn out in the 100k miles that are on the axle.
Option 2: Stock rebuild with new Auburn posi unit $1200. This was the shop's recommendation for an upgrade from stock.
Option 3: Aftermarket rearend $2500. While this option will certainly do the job, I'm just not convinced that the extra cost is really worthwhile.

The shop is ******* retarded. The STOCK posi is an auburn...
Get a new rearend if you plan on having any fun with the car.
The stock 10 bolts are beyond garbage. If you wanna play, you gotta pay. If you want a stock 10 bolt to be reliable, put the car back to stock and drive it like a grandma.

The rear at the above link is what I would go with for your usage. The price includes free shipping, and is a much better deal than what you would of received through Summit, plus whoever you talked to there doesn't know what they're talking about. Bob

who ever you were talking to don't know f body's, go big and forget about it and have all the fun you want, you will keep putting money in the small 10 bolt, every time you will up-grade something in the 10 the next part will go. that just my opinion. (opinion's are like *** holes, every body has one), i have a dana 60s on order.

Mobile site is fowling me up^^
After much deliberation it seems like the only certainty lies in an aftermarket axle. Guess I'll just have to keep this car for awhile to make sure I get my money's worth. There's another thread in this section concerning 10 bolt issues that was illuminating as well.
Thanks everyone for your input.

^^^ x2 for Carl. He's good people!
How much is enough? When you're done staring at you car on blocks because you've built a combo front to back that "works". I considered an S60 but ended up with a 9. Can't go wrong with either. I too will have 100% street car, no stickies, etc. Consider it insurance...
