I'm still happy with my swap...I'll now be doing a 3800 stall.... But the 2.73s on a pretty much stock car just felt sluggish....The 3.73s FEELS like I picked up a second on my daily 0-55mph commute..I swear, when I first reserched gears, everyone praised them, talking about how much they woke up the car and was just an awesome mod...After I started this thread......I haven't heard those words since....I'm glad I did the swap, but now I can't wait for my stall....

I had 3.73 in my car. It was nice did get up and go but i hated to take it over 65 cause of the rpms it was tacking. Now I have pit in 3.00 gear and a 3200 stall should be about a wash change but I'll be able to cruise on the highway at a much lower rpm plus if I take 4th to red line it's 200mph :p

I'm not sure what sort of car or rear you're referring to here (I'm not familiar with what rear a 3.00 gear is manufactuered for), but if it's any kind of 4L60E/LS1 setup, you'll notice better track results from a 3.00 (or even 2.73) gear with a 3200 stall than you would with a stock stall and a 3.73 gear.

my 373 gear car on a 26.5" tire turned 2450 rpm @ 70 mph. you must have the same tolerance my wife does haha. even at those SUPER HIGH OUT OF CONTROL HIGHWAY RPMS, the car still knocked down 27 mpg mixed. i owned the car 2 years and put 32k miles on it, it's not like it rarely got driven. mostly weekend/week night as i had a take-home company vehicle to drive to and from work.

i am not arguing that gears are a better mod than a stall. as stated previously, i have been there and done that. however, i will say...after installing the converter, i was fighting shifting issues a lot. i installed a cooler, deep pan and a shift kit. made repeated trips back to my tuner just to get a clean 2-3 shift, never to get it. that was frustrating. i was 2 seconds from putting a th350 in it when i sold the car to start with a better platform.

Most people have a 25.66" tall tire on these cars for street driving. A 26.5" tire would reduce cruising rpms about ~100rpm (minor I know, but still something).

Not sure how you got 27mpg mixed, with 3.73s and highway rpms of 2400+. I've owned these cars brand new, high mileage used, stock and modified; never once have I seen 27mpg out of an A4 car with mixed driving. Only time I've seen mileage like that is with 100% highway driving and a stock internal engine with stock gears. I am limited to E10 fuel here though, perhaps you are lucky enough to have non-ethanol gas in your area; that would definitely help mileage.

I put a Yank 3500 in an otherwise stock '00 WS6 many years ago, didn't have a custom tune or anything, and the car shifted perfectly with the stock trans. I know that people sometimes have PCM issues with really big stalls though, but a good tuner should be able to fix that (if not, then everyone would have those problems).

Gears require tuning as well, to get the shift points and speedo back in line. I remember people having a lot of issues and needing to use some fuzzy math to get their cars shifting right after a gear swap, back in the days before LS1 Edit/HPT/etc.

These days, tuning should not be a problem for gears OR a stall, the software is able to do what needs to be done, it's just a matter of how good the tuner is, and/or if they miss something (we're all human and do make mistakes).

Wow. This thread has been awesome to read. I knew a little about gears. And nothing at all about a stall. Now at least i know a little about stalls. I have a lt1 a4 car and im planning on doing one or the other but not both right now. I just want to clarify because from what i have read i will notice more from a stall first. I drive mostly city with every now and then jumping on the highway for 3 exits. (One side of town to another). I have a friend with an ls1 a4 car full bolt on with 3.73s and loves it. But when im riding shotgun with him he is tacking 80mph at about if not more than 3000rpms. IMO that is to much.

Looking back at things I wish I would have went stall before gears. Going from 2.73s to 3.42s was alright, but the 3200 custom spec'd stall was the WOW factor.

I have researched stalls for awhile now. And i found somewhere else i forgot the site but that a stock lt1 motor gains .4 from a 3600 stall. Is this true does anyone know from self experience?

With a stall, gears never matter that much. Your cam/stall will work MUCH better together.
