Default Gear wine

I have a stock 2002 z28 and the rear end is starting to make noise... i was wondering if i can fix it before it gets worse or what type or differential should i buy???

if its a 6 speed your going to get a lot of responses saying to ditch the 10bolt as its a piece of crap, behind an automatic it may live a bit longer. If its whining probably going to need at least new gears, and install kit.

If You would describe the noise it would help in determining the problem(s). It might require some axle bearings or it might need more.
Whatever the issue weigh out the cost and work of the repairs versus replacing with a rearend better suited to Your car and Your driving style.

its an automatic and the it sounds like a humming noise every couple of seconds

Typically a humming noise is a bearing, the most common bearing to go out is the axle bearing but an intermittent bearing noise sometimes is an indicator of a bent axle. You need to get it checked out soon!

Do the brakes surge when applying even pressure to the brake pedal?

so im gonna go and change the rear ... my friend is selling a full 12 bolt assembley with 3.42 gears for 1100 .. is that a good price

It was never installed on his car but the guy he bought it from used it but never had slicks on it
