Gears or Stall
Ok heres the question. Which way would you go??? Add a stall convertor or lower gears?? I have 3.23s in an 02 SS and I know the stall will pick it up more than some 3.73 gears but is the stall the way to go or not for the money. I can get some new 3.73s installed out the door for $500.00 to $600.00. The stall will cost twice that after u figure flexplate and cooler and everything else and of course your stock 4l60e will go out after the install. Is the gear worth it or is the stall worth it. What is the most bang for the money? Please chime in if you have experience either way. Opinions please Not a race car its a street car with basic bolt-ons.

i am in the exact same boat as you ... i got 2.73's and a 1995 formula those are the only differences .... i am leaning to a stall cause the 10bolt is a weak rear. you spent $600 and then it breaks then your out that money and have to buy a new rear ... replace it with a 10bolt(less money) or up grade and it wont break again. both choices cost a lot of money.
stall: find a tight on that is like 3600+ and it can drive like normal with a minor tune
start up cost = more with stall
gears = less but more risk for broken parts

Either one is gonna break ****, but I would do gears since theyare cheaper and dont require a tune except maybe for the speedometer cal. The 10bolt is fine if your just a bolt on motor. Start putting slicks on it and it's a different story. Go with the gears man. I did mine but i went with 410 and IMO, it's the biggest bang for the buck.

Gears first / best bang for the buck
Gears first... Then build a High performance transmission with hi stall & add the trans cooler. You will also need a rear end later.
Johnny at Extreme transmissions builds an awesome transmission.
He is an F Body trans specialist.
Great price shippped to you.
I went with a Rev Maxx 3400 stall converter from e bay for 299.00
Make sure to retain lock up feature with converter for good MPG.
I now have a Midwest Chassis Fab 9 rear end.
Im very happy with eveything. Well worth the money.

I posted a thread asking 3000 stall or 3:73s a couple of weeks ago....you should serch the forum for it...I went with the gears, but I also had 2:73s. Their was 5 pages of opinions, and then I updated it a week ago when the install was done... you should check it out. If you have 3:23s you should get a stall...You'll pick up close to nothing swaping out 23s to 73s..a stall will give you way better performace gains then gears....If you were in the same boat as I was I would say 3:73s all day, but you already have a decent ratio...Get a stall..

If anything, if you were a m6 you would jump to 4:10s...but not 3:23 to 73s....My 2:73s imao sucked ***, but If I had stock 3:23s I would've loved getting a stall first...had to get rid of my gears first though...big sotp feeling

go with the stall man , the gears ya have are great in that car . the conv is the best rt to go and u will deff feel a diff with it , ya may not even notcie the diff with the gears . both are gonna need a tune either way to be really effective

not worth it to go to 3.73 for 600 bucks if you got 3.23 in the car already. i would say do your stall 1st and if you really wanted to do gears for cheap just buy an m6 stock 3.42 rear for 150 bucks and swap the whole thing in.
