Default Is this stock?

I did a service/cleaning on the rear end of my car this weekend and I found this in there. It has little "worm" screws running through it instead of plates or cones. What is it, and is it stock? Oh, it's 28 spline too.



Here are some after shots of it cleaned up.

looks like a torsion differential to me

thats a gov lock rear diff ... i thought most of those were in trucks ? either way it is a weak unit , at least the truck ones are

It's stock if it's in a 99-02.

have you got a pic of it(the carrier) rotated 180.
99-02 had Torsens,but that view doesn't look like a Torsen center block(paddle) and it might be a gov-lok(hope not). the block is shaped wrong.

that looks like a gov lock to me man , same as what is in the 1/2 ton trucks lolol . i just did a rear dif service on one and it looked just like it

That's the only pic I have of it. The traditional pin was a large rectangular chunk in this one. It had reliefs machined in it for the axles and a notch on the far end that made it fit only one way in the carrier.

Long and short of this....Is it a good unit? I am having a vibration that pulsates at higher speeds (60-80 and up) and I have tried lots of things to get rid of it to include balancing wheels, replacing steel drive shaft with new alluminum one, setting pinion angle, removing poly trans mount, and adding SFC's. Could this thing cause such a vibration?

Backside of the block is different from any torsen I have ever seen. It must be the gov-lock.

idk what they are called but my 01 camaro has one just like it i like it alot better them the cone style it replaced

yea that does look a bit different the torsion. Not sure... but the diff may have been replaced.

I know it didn't come in the car. The RPO codes state that it had a posi 2.73 gear in it and this is 3.42 now. I have no idea why they would use such a small gear ratio on the auto's. This feels perfect with the 4L60 and the 3.73 is great on the T56.

the 4l60Es' .7 overdrive and 2.73s' were necessary to help GMs' CAFE (corporate average fuel economy),it had nothing to do with the kind of performance we're interested in.
