Anybody ever run in to this? Just traded for a 99 Trans am .It had a rear axle seal leaking. After removing wheel , brakes ,diff cover and taking all the proper steps, I couldnt get the axle to move to pop the c-clips out. After some head scratching , I realized someone had put in bearing savers( I know and you guys know that is not suppose to be done) There are center punch marks on the c-clips where they forced them in ...anybody have any ideas on how to take these axles out with out doing any further damage ? Appreciate andy help I can get at this point

you need to push that axle toward the housing and get the C-Clip out. You first have to remove the center link. If you have traction control you need to remove your wheel speed sensors as well.

Take the carrier caps off, remove the side shims on the side you got the axle out of and see if you can get enough wiggle room to remove the c clip.
How can you tell it has a axle saver if the axle is still in?

If you get your head in the wheel well and take a very careful look you can see just an edge of it sticking out . It probably wouldnt have crossed my midn , but I have run into this before on other vehicles .

People use bearing savers when they have too much wear on the axle..correct way to do it is to replace the axles..instead they just kind of move where the bearing rides instead.

I've heard of it being done. Never seen it, The way the guy got around it was as was said, removed the bearing caps. moved the diff. over a touch and got the c clip out. then he used brute force to get it out. only thing to be wary of is potentially screwing up the axle tube. he somehow got his a little tweaked when he hammered on the axle. In the long run he used it as an excuse to get a nice 12 bolt and call it done.

Alright, i'm gonna be that guy but heres my opinion
First, those suggesting removing the bearing caps and the shims, how do you plan to remove a shim that the axle, which is stuck in, is wrapped around????
so that's out
If someone hammered the C-clips in, your pretty much fucked, you have a few choices as i see it.
1:Hammer the **** out of the axle where the axle flange is, and i mean beat the crap out of it to try and break the bearing and get the axle farther in, 10-15lb sledge and a big dude, it will probably ruin the axle and make the bearing a bitch to get out but it's good stress management
2:Sawzall the end of the axle off and repeat the sledgehammer procedure
3: Cry

If he were going to ruin the rear he might just as well buy a new one.
If you read close I said remove the side shim from the side the axle came out of.
If all els failed he could have fished the side shim up enough to measure its thickness and then bust it in half and fish the rest out of the rear. That would give plenty of room to remove the clip. Then he would have to order a new side shim that measured the same as the one he broke to replace it.
But I guess sawing the axle tube in half could work. Make sure you have a lot of time and blades handy. Axles are hardened.

Okay..answer of the day is..We ended up cutting the axle >>unfortunately the ABS rings at the axle were both damaged..the bearings did come out fine and the axle tubes are not stretched . But now I need to find the ABS rings...GM says they are not replaceable and that I will either have to find a set of junk axles and remove or spend the outrageous amount of money they want for them . GM also tried to tell me they are not press on's ...right !!! Any more ideas?

When I still had a 10 bolt I was going to go this route and build up my 10 bolt... well that would have been a waste for what I do. But this is a great alternative and way better then factory axles!

Nice thought,and those are the axels I'm going with with ..but I talked to Moser on Friday and they said that they dont come with them..so any other idea's ? Anybody have a set they would want to sell ? Set of axles with dust all over them ? Just need the retianers! Thanks!

Rearend is back together ! New Yukon axles ( they come with the ABS rings on them ) new brakes/rotors/bearings/seals/emergency brake shoes..now to replace the brake lines while i have it in the air ....would have liked to replace the backing plates, but I couldnt find any that the price was right on ..any ideas, besides GM ?
