Default 12 bolt for M6, 9 inch for A4?

I've seen several threads mention 12 bolts for M6 and 9 inch rears for A4's as a rule of thumb. Any reasoning or explanation on why this would be?

You have it backwards...

a Moser 12 bolt will still get case deflection behind a 6 speed and cause the 12 bolt to whine.

a 9" is more power robbing then a 12 bolt and is better behind the 6 speed due to the 6 speed much more harsh on the power and torque transfer through the drive line.

The A4 would benefit from a 12 bolt more because the slightly less weight and drivetrain loss the 12 bolt has and is not as hard on the 12 bolt.

M6 you want a S60 or 9inch all the way. A4 can use any and you should be fine for most builds.

Yes, I had my question backwards. Thank you for the explanation between the two on the 9 inch being overall stronger.

So the S60 will work fine with a t56? Does it need a custom driveshaft to work or will stock length work?
