Urgent! Gear Pattern Check
Ok so I was supposed to leave for a 1000 mile trip to virginia today, but that didnt happen cause I was up til 6am trying to get this thing together with a decent pattern. Finally just ran it for less than a mile and it whined terribly on decel, so now its back apart again. These are new FRPP gears im putting in my 8.8 and am having some trouble getting a good pattern. These pics are with .010 backlash.
What do ya think? Possibly to deep judging by the drive side?? And thanks for any help in advanced, this thing is driving me crazy

all 4pics are with the same setup?
The 1st 2 are riding off the tooth the pinon depth is way off. 3-4 you went a little to far, how much did you move it?
Ive only worked on my s60 really BTW, never worked on a 8.8 btw.

Thats the same setup. First 2 are the coast side, second 2 are the drive. I believe this is with a 30 pinion shim which seems to be the average for the 8.8s. Ya the depth is obviously off pretty good, i just dont know which way to move it. Ive moved it from 25-35 and they all looked pretty much the same...frustrating.

Haha I was going to say that I dont see it changing at all, pattern stays the same all the way around. So should I pull shim out? Or put more in? Decisions, decisions

Ok so I removed .010 pinion shim leaving me with .020 total, backlash is a .008, Looks 1000 times better lol.

Should I be worried that the pattern is in different locations, heel to toe, around the ring gear. Runout is .004 which I understand is the max allowed, So should I just let it be? Pattern looks pretty good to me, dont really know which way I would move it if I should. Thanks guys

Ok this is with a .025 pinion shim and a kinda big backlash of .012
What you think? Tighten up the backlash a hare and run it? Or pull out a bit and go to a .023ish pinion shim?

More shim? If anything I was thinking less shim. A .028 is going to make it look more like the first set of pics, which was definitely not right. What part of the pattern makes you say to put more shim in?? Gears are confusing...

i think i would go back with the 20 and 8 setup that looks pretty good the contact is pretty well in the middle of the teeth on both sides. did they not send a card or mark on the pinion what to set the depth and backlash at? either way though the 20 and 8 set up looks good

.020 looks good, you are less likely to have noise that way. Going slightly deeper wouldn't hurt, but I'd leave it right there. Set backlash and call it a day. It should not make noise.

I've installed a bunch of gears in 8.8's and after measuring the pinion depth I've found that the shim in the original gear set is very close (.001-.002) if not spot on to what the new FRPP gear set requires. What pinion shim came out of the old setup because I'd say this happens 90% of the time out of the 100 that I've done. Are you sure the bearing cone is fully seated into the housing? It's also possible that something might be lodged behind the bearing cone not allowing it to seat properly. Also, I like to set an 8.8 up with .008-.009 backlash for a street car or .007 for a race car with limited street use. How's your side bearing preload? Have you taken a rotational torque measurement with the carrier in the housing (no axles).
