Default 10 bolt carnage, happened during normal driving.

On my way home from a trip to TN last month, headed back to AR, my rear started making a whine. It wasn't bad, but has gradually gotten worse over the past month. It was getting me back and forth to work, until one day I washed my car and on the way home just CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK, loud as hell, vibrating/shaking/knocking my entire car, through the driveshaft, transmission, shifter, everything was shaking. Car has been down for a few weeks, and I finally took the rear end cover off to see what was going on.

Pinion lost a bunch of teeth, and the ring lost a few too. I'm not really sure how it happened under normal cruising driving down 6th gear on the highway. But it is what it is, these gears are TINY. I will be throwing in a free stock 3.42 gear from a friend for about a month and then I will be buying a 4.10 12 bolt rear end with a chromoly driveshaft in August.

Can't wait to get some strong 4.10s to launch!

Pieces pulled from it.

Notice the missing teeth from the pinion

Piece lodged between the differential and ring, also notice the chunks missing from the ring

Yeah, my car was still driving around when I took this off, it just made a TON of noise and clunks. It's possible.

I hope these F-body differentials are not noted for this!

The differential's spider gears all looked ok, none were broken. It's the tiny ring and pinion that is crap.

I just took mine apart last week and busted the top and bottom spider, but nothing else, my buddy broke them at a stop light before he sold me the car, drove around np but made noise in reverse, the ring and pinion on mine are low milage, 3.73s never a fun sight once you get in there.

I've seen the ring and pinion plenty of times changing fluid, but actually holding a ring gear outside of the differential. WOW they are just too damn small for these cars.

My 10 bolt blew up at the track when i launched off idle. I have an A4 also, headers, p&p TB, stock cam, stock converter, street tires. It wasnt making any noise either. My spider gears flew apart. OH WELL
