IMO: 10 bolt underrated.
I don't understand what's going on with all these 10 bolt problems people are having. I am wondering if it is some false hype, but i've heard of tons of failures. My 10bolt has not hiccuped. Im knocking on wood but...
I have an 404 hci m6 car that has just under 50k and ive had it for 7 years.
Stock 3.42 10 bolt, changed fluid in it once.
Notes:
-Ive had a nitrous ls1 that got it to 12.1 on street tires (old setup).
-Ive blown my engine and my transmission, so its not like it's being babied.
-I currently probably have just shy of 550/500 rwhp/tq on a 404 stroker, hci, and nitto drag radials. I obviously spin sometimes, but there's been no shortage of decent launches and hard shifts. Full weight.
-Textralia clutch, drill mod, nitto DR 275s.
-Just finished another season and it stayed together just fine.
Obviously using my common sense, ive been preparing to get a 9inch.... but dang... if it aint broke, I don't think it needs to be fixed. I havent been to the track with this setup but I really don't think itll have any problems handling some hard launches and 1/4 miles.
My closest few friends that are into fbodies all have stock 10 bolts and they have not broken them. Similar use/setups.

Mine got to 107k miles with some good beatin in the past couple years. It actually broke Cruising down the street, at like 35mph in a residential, not even driving fast or hard. I'm currently building a 9" that will be done in a week or two. The pinion sheared about 4 complete teeth off of it and taking some good chunks out of the ring gear. Differential and axles are perfect though.
In your list, however, I don't see any REAL tires listed either, but that mindset doesn't answer why mine broke just cruising.

knock on wood, mine has lasted......i shift hard all of the time (as long as i'm moving).....in this vid, i had brand new 275 Mickey DR's at 22psi, and tried to take it fairly easy since i wanted to drive my car home.....later that evening (the 2nd race in the vid), i said f*ck it, if it breaks it breaks.....i launched harder than i ever have (about 3500) and it held up, no whining or clucking.....it's still just as quiet as ever.....but f*ck my 10 bolt, it's just a matter of time and i'll be stranded......soon as i find a good 9" for sale somewhere reasonably close to nashville, the 10 bolt is going to the scrap yard

Launch the car on some ET Streets from 5500 a few times and see what happens.
1.9x 60' isnt exactly what I would describe as beating on the car.
10 bolt will live in a street car with a street tire. Nittos are noting but street tires.

Mine is completely stock and whines like a supercharger on the highway. No track time, no driving hard, just 80k miles of easy driving. I know some people who have luck with the 10 bolt. I know this guy around my place who consistently runs 11's on spray with his 10 bolt and then DD's the car year round. Consider yourself blessed I guess lol.

What kind of 60fts are you getting?
My best with the 10 bolt before blowing it up was a 1.76, best with my 12 bolt was 1.48 and I have blown it up 4 times.
The 1.76 was a 12.0. The 1.4s/1.5s were 11.0 and high 10s.
If you are no better than 1.8s, I can believe it. Nitto 555rs are hardly stickier that stock. Put a Hoosier QTP on there and I bet 1 6000 rpm launch cooks it.
Lots of 10 bolts have blown up, and I mean lots, mostly 6 spds with traction and high rpm launches.

I've seen a few last for a while but never when real tires and drivers are in play. I broke mine 4-5 times in different ways. I always had a spare in the garage to swap. Now I have a 9. If your street racing you should be fine but once the idea of a good 60’ takes a hold of you it is all over. IMO you are lucky… I’ve seen motors take a 200 shot for years and not blow, that doesn’t mean they all will.

I'm on my 4th rebuild since 5 years; 3-4K miles per summer, no winter, no track since I broke it at the drag strip after 6 runs, only roll racing and street tires!! LOL Next summer I'll be getting one before it goes boom again. Every year is a rebuild for me. I installed the nitrous 2 years ago, not even 10 bottles since and a lot wasted by the purge.
..FYI, it did break 1 time when I was driving around town @2000rpm. Youre just lucky. But dont change it if it aint broke!!

Here ya go, a few comments from guys running the "POS" 10 bolt!
https://ls1tech.com/forums/12-second...w-10-bolt.html
My opinion is the same as many others, if your racing it, your breaking it. There are $2000 & $3000 rear ends out there breaking as well. If your throwing 800 or more at it then I aggree, it probably wont last.
Same as a supercharger making 800 on a stock bottom end. One day its gonna break. I think with todays aftermarket suspension products and a chasis tune, the 10 bolt will last for longer than you think.
Nothing wrong with the 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60 they are far superior units than the factory. But so is forged internals.
