Default 40 spline axles?

Not installed yet.

My setup is

Moser 9"
Strange third member
430 gears
Full Spool
40 spline Moser axles
UMI torque arm with tunnel brace
Driveshaft loop
UMI diamond sub frame connectors
AGX 8 way adjustable shocks
UMI double adjustable panhard bar
Double adjustable LCA's W/ relocation brackets
Sphon Weld in pro series sway bar.

I get a lot of people saying the 40 spline is no good and i should of went with something else im looking for opinions here. Should i have went with something else? How hard is it to change axles later on? Car is just a 450rwhp driver for now but will be a boosted 408. Thanks guys

The 40-spline axles are going to be overkill in Your application described above. Other than that they will have no harm to anything, cant imagine why someone would say 40-spline is no good they are much stouter than the 35-spline with some additional weight that You will never be able to tell is there. You do not need to change Your axles.

Thanks Carl. I was thinking the same. I ran 35 spline before and i know 40 are overkill but i wasn't for sure what they were meaning.

not to hyjack but, what do you guys think about going with gun drilled 40 splines over standard 35 splines for a daily driver?

WS6SP33D you never mentioned your housing ends but if you have a housing end designed to mount your factory brakes the problem you get into is the bearing itself ends up thin. Which would be fine for a drag car application but potential wear could be faster on a street car.

ElkySS I'm all for cutting weight out of things but like I tell anyone that ask about gun drilled axles is why? If you are not using a spool and a fabricated rear end it really isn't gaining you anything for the money spent. Same goes if you are using a stock width rear end. They only drill 22" if I recall and on an axle 33" long the weight savings is minimal at best.

Narrow a housing -3 + per side, race brakes, Light weight spool, Fabricated 9", 35SPL gun drilled axles, and lightened axle ends. This would show an OK amount of weight loss.

As for 40SPL there really isn't ever a need for them, most cars can get away with 31SPL to be honest. The cool factor of having them is always a plus though and like mentioning above depending on which housing end you are using you could up with a thin bearing that could have a shorter life span. 31spl axles will take you to 9.50 range.

I have ran for years on a non-gundrilled 31 spline setup. The rear end is still in excellent shape and am only upgrading now since i am narrowing like Eric pointed out.

For the average car(9.99 and slower) a 31 is all you will ever need.

On the other hand, other than bearing life, you arent really hurting anything with a 40spline.

Yeah seems like too much but if you have it run it, you should definetely never have an issue anyway
