just found out i have an open diff.............
hi my name is dewaun from duluth minnesota i have a 86 iroc-z with a built 450 horse 355 and owned it for about a year every time i mean very single time i go WOT both wheels spin and leave even tire marks but we pulled the cover to see what gear i have and its a open differential with 3:42s how is it that both wheels spin it is not welded or spooled.

You should post some pictures of the rear with the cover off, otherwise I doubt you'll get many decent responses. I personally have no idea how a truly open differential would leave two black marks, I don't think that's possible.

An open differential CAN spin BOTH tires,but most of the time NO.
The right wheel spins because it has less traction than the left.
When left and right traction is equal,both spin.
The right wheel spins because it has less traction than the left.
When left and right traction is equal,both spin.

doesnt do is all the time in a burnout but always when i launch.........could it be because with a big 3400 stall the launch makes the both lose traction and sorry about the post doing it from a tablet. but when car is off the ground wheels spin in different directions.
