Another dumb question... I see many folks mentioning moving from a 4.10 to a 4.11. Why? If a 3.90 is very similar to a 4,10, why on earth would you bother switching to a 4.11 from a 4.10?

It's pinon/ring gear ratio 10/41 (4.10) 9/37 (4.11) 4.11 has slightly thicker teeth on the ring gear so they are a bit stronger.

I've got the S60 with 4.56 gears. I wish I'd have gotten a 3.90 gear. The 4.56 is just useless with 1st gear on the street. And remember with the S60 your carrier will change from 3.90 to 4.10 and up. So I'm screwed basically. I really wish someone would've told me this earlier. The 9" is great because of so many different ratios. The S60 is better because of strength BUT I have a series 3 carrier and now need a 2 to go with a lower gear. Wish I'da know. Live and learn I guess.

if you are a m6 and making over 500rwhp then go with a 3.90,if you are under 500rwhp then go 4.11 this is all based on a stock weight t/a or camaro.

If youre really that torn between a 4.11 and 3.89 and such for your nine inch just get a 4.00 lol. Split the difference and you'll end up happy. Nine inches have a boatload of ratios

Missing one big factor here with this statement..shift RPM.

I'll run a 27" tire, looking at a set of 4.30 Gears for track use, 7k shift.

This may be a dumb question but I am wondering if the gears in my 02 ss are stock or not bc someone posted that running 70mph in 5th is around 2200 rpms. My car is a M6 and in 5th running 60mph I'm a little over 2000 rmps

Two ways to check. Pull cover off of rear and count teeth. Pita. Easy way is to jack up rear and place jack stands under it. Make a small chalk mark along length of driveshaft. Trans in neutral and turn rear wheel while counting revolutions of shaft. If its 4 or more you probably have 4:10's. If just under 4 its 3.73. Just over 3 then 3.xx. You get the picture.
To clarify, thats revs of shaft for one complete turn of your tire.

Most people run a 26" tire.. and with a 26" tire it's not a matter of how my cruising in 6th gear rpm will be, it's do I have enough gear before I slam the limiter in 4th in the 1/4.

what's your overdrive ratio in that gear? i'm spinning that fast with 3.73's.

aahh......in the mt82's, 5th is 1-1, and 6th is .65. i wouldn't think there's be THAT much difference between them, but apparently i'm wrong. i'm not sure how tall the tire is either.....mustangs used to use 26" tall tires. i'll have to walk out there with a tape measure.......

My car isn't a daily driver but I drive it alot, every weekend. I'm running 4.56's and I love them. I live 45 minutes from our "cruise" area so I take highways to get there. I really like the 4.56s but I don't really do long trips with them. I would think 4.10s would be a good choice.
